We remember and celebrate the life of Nicholas A. Balsano, our beloved husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, brother, uncle, friend and teacher. Nicholas spent his childhood with a large, loving family and many great neighborhood friends in Clason Point, NY. He spoke fondly, and often, of their adventures (and mischief) together. At the age of 13, he met Barbara whom he would go on to marry for 53 amazing years. Together, they would have six loving children, 9 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren. Nicholas excelled academically and graduated from George Washington University Medical School; dedicating his life to medicine and the care of those in the community in which he was raised. Nicholas was proud to serve his country in Vietnam, sacrificing that which was most important to him, time with his family. As an experienced, well respected surgeon he enjoyed not only caring for his patients, but teaching his skill and compassion to future surgeons as well. Nicholas' family was the greatest joy in his life. He was his happiest at the head of a loud table, surrounded by family listening to him chuckle as he shared his stories. He often had a grandchild on his lap and a hot pepper on his plate. His dedication to his family was imminent right until his last days, which were spent by the side of Barbara, his wife, helping her remember the life and family they built together. Through these trying times, he still found smiles, jokes and time for his family, especially his grandchildren. We will love and miss our dad and poppy dearly and he leaves us with unforgettable memories and life lessons. In lieu of flowers, please donate to the Alzheimer’s Association and help us fight against a disease that greatly impacted our family, and a cure for which was of great significance to Nicholas.
