Richard Armstrong Barnstead, a lifelong resident of Scarsdale, New York died peacefully at home on July 15, 2018 at the age of 88. He was born on July 7, 1930 in New York City to Lloyd Armstrong Barnstead and Grace Goldner Barnstead.
Richard graduated from Scarsdale High School in 1948 and went on to receive degrees from Brown University and Cornell Law School. He spent four years as a Naval Officer after graduating from Naval OCS in Newport, Rhode Island. He returned to Scarsdale with his family and completed his formal education with a Master’s Degree in Taxation from NYU Law School. A former principal at Alexander Grant and Company, Richard retired as a Vice President of Taxation from Peabody International Corporation in Stamford, Connecticut.
A member of the Campfire Club of America in Chappaqua, New York, Richard had a passion for riflery, hunting, building guns and handloading ammunition. In his thirties he earned a private pilot license with an instrument rating and enjoyed flying his Cessna 182. In 1963 Richard bought an old farmhouse and property in Ashland, New York, originally to use for hunting purposes but he also spent considerable time planting fruit trees and blueberries. The property has become a peaceful retreat for four generations of family and their friends.
Richard was a loving husband, father and grandfather and is survived by his wife, Jane Darling Barnstead to whom he was married for 63 years as well as his daughters, Linda G Cargo and husband, Paul; Carol J Luedeman and husband, Mark; Ann W Baker; and grandchildren Lloyd Cargo, Lauren Cargo, David Cargo, Dan Baker, Sarah Baker and June Luedeman.
Visitation and a memorial service will be held on Saturday, July 21, 2018 from 3:00 to 5:00pm at Edwin L. Bennet Funeral Home, 824 Scarsdale Avenue, Scarsdale, New York.
