Claire Marie (Milligan) McGourty - 90, of The Villages, Florida, passed away on Saturday, July 15, 2023, at Level Up Assisted Living in Leesburg, Florida. She was the beloved wife of the late John C. McGourty, with whom she shared many wonderful years before his passing in 1983.
Born June 18, 1933 in Boston, Massachusetts, she was the daughter of the late Daniel Vincent and Helen Driscoll Milligan. Claire grew up in Dorchester, where she met her husband, John. Shortly after marrying, they chose Scituate as the place to raise their family and moved to their home on Poplar Avenue in 1961. During her nearly 50 years in Scituate, Claire became an integral part of the community. She was an active member of St. Mary of the Nativity Church in Scituate Harbor and gave back to others by crocheting mats for the homeless to sleep on, and hats for the men and women in the military to keep their heads warm. In addition to caring for her family, Claire also worked outside the home as a clerk for Verizon for 20 years. Her most important role, though, was being a mom and Nana to her large family, which extended well beyond family lines. She was known to all as Nana and was given the nickname of "Nana Treat", as she always had special goodies for her children, grandchildren, their friends and neighbors.
Claire was a true Boston sports fan, and followed the Red Sox and Patriots with passion. She thoroughly enjoyed cooking and loved to share her culinary talents with family and friends, nourishing their hearts as well as their bodies. One of her favorite pastimes was going camping with her family. She and John purchased their first camper in 1977 and thus began their tradition of family camping trips. Eventually, most of her children purchased campers as well and the extended McGourty clan would all gather together at various campgrounds to enjoy nature and each other's company. Claire would relish these special times together with her family and spoke of them often.
After she retired, Claire moved down to Florida in 2010 in search of consistently warm weather and found a new home and many friends in The Villages. There she relaxed, crocheted and was known to enjoy a glass of wine every once in a while as she passed her later years.
Devoted mother of Tom McGourty and his wife Nancy of Plymouth, Massachusetts, John McGourty and his wife Mary of Norwood, Massachusetts, Paul McGourty and his wife Emily of Scituate, Massachusetts, Kathleen Kerrigan and her husband James Jr of Plymouth, Massachusetts, Ann Marie Restucci and her husband Anthony of Marshfield, Massachusetts, and the late Ellen Hyland of Carver, Massachusetts.
Cherished Nana to 14 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren. Loving sister to her 7 siblings and fondly remembered by a tremendous number of nieces and nephews.
A visitation will be held on Wednesday, August 9, 2023 from 4-8 PM at Richardson-Gaffey Funeral Home, 382 First Parish Road, Scituate. Funeral Mass on Thursday, August 10 at 10 AM at St. Mary of the Nativity, 1 Kent Street, Scituate Harbor. Inurnment to follow at St Mary's Cemetery, Meeting House Lane, Scituate.
