OBITUARY

Denis Anthony English

April 26, 1937May 12, 2020

Denis Anthony English, 83 of Scituate, MA, formerly of South Yarmouth, MA, Manchester, CT and Ballyporeen, Co. Tipperary, Ireland passed away suddenly on May 12, 2020. He was the beloved husband of the late Rita G. English, with whom he shared 53 years of marriage before her passing in 2015. Born in Ballyporeen, Co. Tipperary, Ireland he was the son of the late Thomas and Mollie English. He graduated from Christian Brothers Secondary School in Mitchelstown. Denis emigrated from Ireland at the age of 16, went on to serve in the United States Marine Corps and then married the love of his life. He was a jack of all trades and could fix anything with a wrench, superglue and duct tape. Denis had a sense of humor that was loved by all. He enjoyed life and spending time with his family.

A devoted son, husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend, Denis will be sorely missed by all who were blessed to have known him. Denis was the loving father of Colleen E. DeGrilla and her husband Stephen of Bermuda, Kelly E. Walsh and her husband Edward of Scituate and Brian P. English, his ex-wife Rose and dog Tipperary of North Eastham. Cherished grandfather of Rosemarie, Molly and Aidan Walsh of Scituate. He is also survived by his two dogs Diamond and Chica (a rescue from the Scituate Animal Shelter). Memorial services will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, contributions in his memory may be made to the MS Society or the Scituate Animal Shelter.

Denis English was an absolutely wonderful and giving man. He and his lovely wife Rita made everyday life an adventure as they explored renovating a beautiful victorian home, making decorative chocolates for my wedding cake, and infusing every event with laughter. My prayers and love go out to his children Colleen, Brian and Kelly and their families. Denis was loved by all.

Billy and I have fond memories of our summer in Cape cod in Denis and Rita s home. They made us feel so welcome and we all enjoyed stories from ballyporeen. Denis was a real gentleman. Great husband dad and grandfather. May he rest in peace.

I spent so much time around your parents growing up on Cape Cod. Our teenage years. What I loved most was how close your parents were. I could feel the love in your house, something mine lacked. Their love is a beautiful thing. I remember laughter. The woman you are today, is because of them. Memories are a comfort, when the sting of death strikes. My your memories bring you a measure of peace. I loved your parents growing up and I know none of you took each other for granted. You are a wonderful example of what family should be. I love you my dear friend❤

My Uncle Denis was one of the most likeable, charismatic people I've ever known. He was a loving brother to my mom and the best friend in the world to my dad. After they had each passed away, he was a consoler who gave me a sense of family rootedness when I thought I had lost that. I loved visiting Denis and Rita, whose home was so warm and welcoming. Denis was a role model in how to see and connect with the humanity in any person he met, regardless of their circumstances. He was kind and he was fun. I loved him more than I ever got around to saying, always thinking there would be more time. I'm so glad he was able to maintain his independence, driving and going where he liked up until the end. I'm so sorry for his children and grandchildren in their loss. I commend my cousins for the wonderful care they provided this lovely man when he got to needing some care and support. One thing I'll bet: There's more craic in heaven, since Denny English got there.

To your family, I am sending condolences upon the loss of Denis, such a good person and husband. It was always a positive encounter to see Denis and Rita together on the Cape over the years, although not often enough. Prayers for them and all of your family.
