Elinor “Ellie” (Hudson) Rowe, 102, of Scituate, and most recently Meredith, NH, passed away peacefully on August 5, 2025. She was the beloved wife of the late Hobart Rowe, with whom she shared 47 years of marriage before his passing in 1991. Born in Lynn, Massachusetts, she was the daughter of the late Rodney and Elsie (Halliday) Hudson.
Words can hardly capture the happy, witty, and hardworking spirit of Ellie—always smiling, always ready to strike up a conversation, and always the gracious hostess, whether for a visit over tea, or a bustling family gathering.
Ellie’s greatest joy was caring for and spending time with her family. Her early years as a wife and mother were filled with making lovingly prepared meals, the lively energy required to raise five children, and keeping a warm, tidy home for Hobie. Later, as a grandmother and great-grandmother, life took on a gentler rhythm—one filled with baking, play, and tender moments. She cherished the time to hold her grandchildren, rub their backs, and say yes to every request—whether it was a board game or kicking a soccer ball in the yard, even well into her nineties.
Second only to her family was Ellie’s love for flowers. Her fragrant rose garden welcomed every guest, while her hydrangeas and baby’s breath grew so hearty and impressive, one might wonder if she had genetically engineered them.
Ellie was a familiar face at the local Dunkin’, where she spent many mornings enjoying a coffee and donut, always ready to chat with friends and neighbors. She was also known for her shopping – from “smart-looking” clothes to antiques, dishes, and beautiful clothes for the newest additions to the family.
Fiercely independent, Ellie lived on her own until the age of 98. Her classic New England spirit—"You're not going to shovel without me!"—perfectly captured her tenacity and warmth. She never took herself too seriously and took great care to make others feel special—whether surprising the kids with a new ball or an antique tea set or baking someone’s favorite treat. She made people feel at home, and she made visits memorable.
She leaves behind her children Pamela Hoffman and her husband William of Sewell, New Jersey; Suzanne Graul of Bristol, New Hampshire; Jeffrey Rowe and his wife Linda of Norwood, Massachusetts; William Rowe and his wife Ashleigh of Deephaven, Minnesota; and the late Richard D. Rowe and his wife Judy of Cinnaminson, New Jersey.
"Nana" to 11 grandchildren, and "Great Nana" to 19 great grandchildren.
A Funeral Service will be held at 10:30 AM on Thursday, August 28, 2025, at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, 465 First Parish Road, Scituate, Massachusetts. Interment to immediately follow at Union Cemetery, Stockbridge Road, Scituate, Massachusetts. Relatives and friends are invited to attend.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Ellie’s memory can be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
