

Elizabeth J. (Knight) Madden aka Betty – 97, of Rockland formerly of Scituate for 74 years, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family on March 30, 2026. She was the beloved wife of the late Henry Madden with whom she shared 67 years of marriage before his passing in 2016.
Born in Marblehead, MA, she was the daughter of the late Robert Sr. and Helen (Martin) Knight.
Devoted mother of Alan Madden and his wife Marcia of Mansfield, Neal Madden and his wife Michelle of Pawcatuck, Conn., and Arleen Bonito and her husband Joseph of Rockland. She was preceded in death by her son Paul Madden of Pembroke.
Cherished Grandmother of 9 and 7 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her granddaughter Nichole (Madden) Sun of Andover, CT.
Visitation - Monday, April 6, 2026, 3-7 pm. Funeral Service 10 am, Tuesday, April 7, 2026. Both at Richardson-Gaffey Funeral Home, 382 First Parish Rd, Scituate, MA.. Interment immediately following at Cudworth Cemetery, Cudworth Road, Scituate. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend.
Betty & Henry enjoyed Square Dancing as members of the Lofty Squares at Kramers Barn in Weymouth, MA for 10+ yrs. She enjoyed bowling at the Satuit Bowl Away in Scituate harbor for more than 50 yrs and was the treasurer. Her Scituate friends enjoyed a Knitting/Craft Club including caning. She also enjoyed sewing clothes (square dance outfits for herself) and her daughter, sewing crafts even Barbie doll clothes, plastic canvas needlepoint crafts, counted cross stitch pictures. She was an avid knitter and won many Blue ribbons for her sweaters at the Marshfield Fair. She was a choir member at Scituates St. Luke's Episcopal Church and in her younger years a choir member at St. Mark's Episcopal Church in Foxboro. She loved reading and could always be found with a book in her hand. She enjoyed watching Jeopardy, Wheel of Fortune and Midsomer Murders. She loved spending time at her summer cottage with family and friends. Sometimes enjoying a frozen pina colada. She loved people watching from her front porch as they headed to and from the beach.
A special thank you to Lenore Shanahan for taking such wonderful care of Mom in her later years and for engaging her in trivia, crossword puzzles, laughter and trips down memory lane.
