

CAVANAGH, Frederick W. “Buddy”- Age 83, of Scituate, passed away on June 14, 2026. He was the loving husband of 54 years to his soulmate Judith Cavanagh. Born and raised in South Boston, he was the son of the late Frederick W. Cavanagh, Sr. and Helen Mutrie. Cherished father of Thomas J Cavanagh, his wife Keri Cavanagh, of Scituate & Mary Lynne Callahan and her husband Brian Callahan, of Scituate. Beloved grandfather (“Pop”) to Eveline Cavanagh, Thomas J. Cavanagh, Jr., Brian Callahan, Brigid Cavanagh, McKenzie Callahan. He was the brother to his late sister and best friend Janice Gordon, and brother in law to Robert Gordon of Bath ME, formerly of South Boston. He was predeceased by his brother in law Thomas “Sunny “ Crockan, his sister in law’s, Jane Earl and Joan Leaman. He will be lovingly remembered by his many nieces and nephews, and great nieces and nephews. He leaves behind his lifelong friends from South Boston, who all share an unbreakable bond with each other.
Buddy and Judy had a lifelong bond that was realized when they were married 7 months after they started dating. He was a letter carrier for Post Office for over 35 years, starting in Boston, then transferring to North Weymouth where he had the best route, along the water in Wessagussett. He was also a Bartender at the Barker Tavern in Scituate, MA for over 30 years, where he started the day it opened. There was no place he enjoyed more than Disney. Took his family there every year. He was a Disney Vacation Club Member, and continued to go with his wife every year, where they would spend weeks at a time together enjoying their home away from home, at the Disney’s Boardwalk Inn.
As a kid he was an exceptional athlete, excelling in football and baseball. He was an avid Racquetball player that was nicknamed “The King of the Kill Shot” in South Boston. He was an active member of the Scituate community, being a past board member of the Scituate Youth Center and Scituate Little League. He coached countless Scituate kids in baseball, softball, basketball, and soccer. Buddy loved to ski and each year would take his family skiing over Christmas and February break. He skied into his early 70’s, skiing 4-5 days per week.
Buddy will be remembered by all who knew and loved him for his loyalty, guidance, love, and tremendous work ethic. A Funeral Mass will be held on Thursday July 16, 2026 at 10am at St. Mary’s of the Nativity Church, 1 Kent Street, Scituate. In lieu of flowers donations may be made online to The Jimmy Fund at the Dana Farber Cancer Institute.
