George G. McCarthy

Born and raised in the Dorchester neighborhood of Boston, George was the third of four children. A graduate of Dorchester High School, he proudly served his country in the United States Army. Following his military service, he returned home and began a long career as a truck driver with Burke Distributing, where he worked for many years while also serving as a proud member of Teamsters Local 122.

It was during those years that George met the love of his life, Edwina. Together they built a life in Dorchester, where they started their family before moving to Scituate in the late 1970s and welcoming two more children. Though Scituate became his home, George's heart never truly left Dorchester. He maintained lifelong friendships and looked forward each year to gathering with his crew at the Marshfield Fair to watch the horse races.

In retirement, George enjoyed spending winters as a snowbird in Englewood, Florida, soaking up the sunshine and taking in Spring Training baseball. Later in life, annual family vacations to the Cape and New Hampshire became some of his most treasured traditions. Whether he was fishing from the dock, grilling steaks and mushrooms for everyone, or discovering a new favorite breakfast spot, George cherished every moment spent with those he loved.

George was happiest when surrounded by family. Whether he was playing fetch on the beach with Dennis and Parko the dog, taking Matthew to see the Blue Angels, watching Jeopardy! with Jennifer, or, as he liked to joke, bailing any of the three of them out of trouble, he found joy in creating memories with his children and grandson. Family gatherings were his favorite occasions, even if the television volume occasionally had to be lowered so everyone could hear one another.

George was predeceased by his adored wife, Edwina; his parents, Patrick and Doris McCarthy; and his siblings, Patrick McCarthy, Jr., Doris Darcy, and John McCarthy.

He is survived by his children, Dennis McCarthy and his wife, Kim, of Marshfield; Matthew McCarthy and his wife, Amanda, of Scituate; and Jennifer McCarthy and her husband, Sean “Tom,” of Quincy. He also leaves behind his treasured grandson, Coby, and his favorite child, Charlie the cat.

The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to George's care team at Croi Health VNA for their compassion, kindness, and support.

Visiting hours will be held on Friday, October 2, 2026, from 9:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. at Richardson-Gaffey Funeral Home, 382 First Parish Road, Scituate. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 11:00 a.m. at St. Mary's of the Nativity, 1 Kent Street, Scituate.

Burial will take place immediately following at Blue Hill Cemetery, 700 West Street, Braintree.
