

Irl was a supervisor in the piping engineering and drafting department at the former Fore River Shipyard in Quincy for 42 years, and worked for both Bethleham Steel Co. and General Dynamics, retiring in 1983.

Irl was born and raised in Hingham and graduated from Hingham HS in 1938. He was a graduate apprentice coppersmith of Bethleham Steel Co. shipbuilding division, Quincy yard. He received an Associate’s in Mechanical Engineering at Lincoln Institute of Northeastern University.
Irl was one of the original founders of Scituate Little League and bowled in many candle pin bowling leagues on the South Shore.
He was a member of Hatherly Golf Club with two holes in one, and member of Satuit Lodge AF & AM with 50 year pin.
He is survived by a daughter; Priscilla Cahill of Palm Coast, FL, a son; Philip Von Iderstein of Scituate, a brother; Ernst S. Von Iderstein of Hanover, six grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, many cousins, nieces and nephews. Irl was predeceased by his former wife; Madeleine E, two brothers; Irwin F. and Nathan L, a sister; Bernice E. Ulrich, and his companion Thelma G. Lorman.
A memorial gathering of friends and family will be held at Richardson-Gaffey Funeral Home, 382 First Parish Rd, Scituate on Sat, July 27, 2013 at 2PM followed by a memorial service at 4PM. Burial private.
In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Irl may be made to the charity of choice.
