Jim was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, veteran, businessman, and friend to many. The loyal son of the late Harold Powers and Helen (Gill) Powers, Jim spent many of his happiest years as a resident of Randolph, where he met the love of his life, Paula, to whom he was married for 60 years. He remained in Randolph for decades where he raised his five children. Jim relocated to Scituate later in life to be closer to his family, and his home away from home, Maria’s Subs & Pizza.
For more than 61 years, Jim was the proud owner of Maria’s in Scituate, Massachusetts. His dedication, hard work, and commitment to his business made him a staple in the community. More than just a business owner, Jim was a familiar and valued presence to generations of customers. His quick wit, sharp sense of humor, and knack for delivering the perfect joke made him memorable to everyone who crossed his path. Jim had a way of making people laugh and smile, and his humor was a special part of what made him so adored.
As a United States Army Reserve veteran, Jim carried a strong sense of commitment and dedication throughout his life. He was also a World Champion candlepin bowler, an accomplishment that reflected his competitive spirit, determination, and love of the sport.
Above all, Jim’s greatest legacy was the love he shared for his family, especially for his beloved wife (Mary) Paula; his brother, Harold “Buddy” Powers, and Buddy’s wife, Leslie; and his children: (Jamie) Jay Powers and his wife, AnnMarie; Tom Powers and his wife, Heather; Denise MacLeod and her husband, Shawn; Mike Powers and his wife, Jenna; and Marianne Christian and her husband, Pete. He also leaves behind twelve wonderful grandchildren and many nieces and nephews who will forever cherish his memory and the special moments they shared with him.
Jim will be deeply missed by his family, friends, loyal customers, and all those fortunate enough to have known him. While his passing leaves an immeasurable void, the memories he created will continue to bring comfort and smiles to those who knew him. The legacy he built will remain forever in the hearts of those he leaves behind.
A Funeral Mass will be held at 10:00 AM on Thursday, October 22nd at St. Mary of the Nativity Church, 1 Kent St., Scituate, MA 02066, with a Celebration of Life immediately following at Oro Restaurant, 227 Chief Justice Cushing Highway, Scituate, MA 02066.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made in Jim’s memory to the Alzheimer’s Foundation or Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.
