

BURT, John Walter- Age 70, of Scituate, passed away unexpectedly on August 17, 2026. He was the son of the late Walter Burt Jr. and Anna Elizabeth (Vidito) Burt. Loving husband of 46 years to Mary Burt. Beloved father to Kevin John Burt, his fiancé Jennifer Huynh Ngo of Marshfield, MA and Timothy Walter Burt of Hingham. He was the cherished brother of Anna Burt Duarte and the late Arthur Burt. He will be lovingly remembered by the Godfrey and Ford Families.
John grew up in a working class family in Woburn Massachusetts. His dad passed away when John was twelve. John graduated from Woburn High in 1974. He went on to study at Salem State College where he met Mark Nardone and Brad Chute. They became life long friends. John graduated from Salem State with a History degree in 1978. John decided to pursue a law degree. He graduated from New England School of Law with a Juris Doctor in 1983. He worked in private practice for Attorney Bob O'Leary followed by Attorney Alan Segal. John decided to further his education earning a Masters in Taxation from Boston University in1987. John transitioned from private practice to a career with the Federal Government in the Estate Tax Division of the Internal Revenue Service. He enjoyed a twenty-four year career and the good company of the many friends he made there. John always had a passion for teaching. He was an adjunct professor at Quincy College, Eastern Nazarene College and Suffolk University. John retired in December of 2023.
John met his wife Mary in high school. They were married in 1980 and enjoyed forty-six years together. They were blessed with two sons, Kevin and Tim. John loved being a Dad. He was a little league coach for Kevin. He was at all the soccer and hockey games cheering Kevin on. He loved that Tim was musically inclined and played the drums. John took Tim to his softball, soccer, basketball games and to swimming and horseback riding lessons. He loved to cheer his sons on. He was proud of Kevin's graduation from Mass Maritime and of Tim's job at South Shore Support Services and Tim's success at his new home with Road to Responsibility. His sons were his world. John was excited to be welcoming Jennifer to the family. He was happy that Kevin had found his soul mate.
John was a life long skier. His dad taught him when he was young and he taught Mary and his sons. He skied all over New England. His adventures beyond included Whistler, Steamboat, Innsbruck, Park City, Aspen, Breck, and so many others. John was big on the outdoors and started hiking clubs in college and in the retirement community. He was an avid golfer who had many golfing buddies and stories. He was a member of the South Shore Golf League and the Scituate Senior League at Widow's Walk. He was also a member of the South Shore Senior Baseball League and the Scituate Senior Book Club. John took classes with Scituate Recreation for Yoga and Spin. He joined the Top of the Hill Gang to expand his network of skiing buddies. He often joked that he was busier in his retirement then he was when he was working. John loved joining groups and connecting with new people.
John also loved to travel. He had past adventures with his family in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Hawaii, Ireland, Scotland, the Caribbean and US National Parks. A perfect day for John would be a day of sailing on the Lazy Snoozin with Kevin and Jenn. John had many more adventures planned and friends to make. He left us all to soon.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Friday August 21, 2026 from 11am-1pm at Richardson-Gaffey Funeral Home, 382 First Parish Road, Scituate. A reception will follow from 1pm - 3pm at the Drift In Restaurant at Widow's Walk, 250 Driftway, Scituate. Burial will be private.
