Born in Minneapolis, Leo grew up in Scituate, the son of the late Leo W. and Grace (Gaudreau) Donovan. He attended local schools and graduated from Boston College High School, the College of the Holy Cross and the Illinois College of Optometry.
Dr. Leo, as he was known by his patients, set up his practice in Marshfield where he became a local favorite. His kindness, larger than life personality and his medical expertise drew patients from the South Shore and beyond.
Leo was a devoted family man, married to Patti (Wherity) Donovan for 40 years. They had two children, John and Courtney, both of Scituate. Leo was one of eight children and loved the boisterous family gatherings that occurred frequently. He was a major sports enthusiast, a good friend to many and someone with a quick wit and great sense of humor. His generosity and kindness were carried throughout his life.
Leo is survived by his brother Paul Donovan of Palm Springs, CA., sister Anne and her husband John Basilesco of East Hampstead, NH; sister Grace and her husband Brian Barnard of Scituate, sister Maura Sullivan of Scituate, brother Stephen and his wife Lisa Donovan of Scituate, sister Jane Hoffman of Hingham, brother Brian Donovan and his partner Erica of Winchester, and his many nieces and nephews.
A funeral Mass will be held at St. Mary of the Nativity Church, 1 Kent Street, Scituate Harbor on Monday, December 5, 2022 at 11 a.m. Visitation Sunday, December 4, 2022 from 2-6 PM at Richardson-Gaffey Funeral Home, 382 First Parish Rd., Scituate. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend. Interment to follow at St. Mary's Cemetery.
