Margaret Anne Murphy (Anne) passed away peacefully at home on January 5th, 2025 at the age of 92 after a long period of declining health. Born November 6th, 1932 in County Limerick Ireland to Michael and Bridie O’Keeffe, Anne had three siblings – brother Paddy and sisters Mary and Colette.
She met her husband John Murphy when he was traveling around Ireland circa 1959. Both smitten, they made plans for her to “visit” upon his return to the United States. Once Anne arrived in New York, they fell in love, got married and started a wonderful life together. Anne and John were married for 57 years before he died in 2017. They moved from NY to Scituate, MA in 1970 where they established roots and raised three children … Michael, Brian and Deirdre. Egypt Park was a great neighborhood to grow up in with lots of young kids and hands-on parents. Lifelong friendships were formed and countless fun memories experienced.
Anne was selflessly devoted to family and always made it her top priority. While primarily a homemaker, she worked part time as a substitute teacher, hostess and receptionist. Anne’s affection for Scituate led to her interest with town politics and becoming a member of The Board of Health. Staunch Catholic faith also kept her involved in local church events and as a CCD teacher.
As a doting mother … she was immersed in her children’s education, activities and career pursuits. Wherever and whenever mom was needed, she answered the call like no other!
In retirement, Anne and John enjoyed winters in Marco Island, FL. Among their shared hobbies were reading and Boston sports – especially Red Sox games at Fenway Park.
Even in her later years, Anne never lost her Irish wit or native brogue. While small in stature, her spirit and heart were enormous. She handled worsening medical problems with amazing strength and grace, never complained and always gently expressed thanks to her caregivers and nurses.
The family extends sincere appreciation to her CNA team who were like angels (Samantha, Leann, Cate, Felismina, Rosilda, Maureen, Bethany, Taylor) and the kind staff at Norwell VNA. All of you provided comfort and compassion to our mom which kept her in the fight for 92 years. Mom and Dad are now united again in heaven and will forever be our guiding light.
Anne is also held in loving memory and survived by son-in-law Dan Finnegan and grandchildren Maeve & Sean.
A Funeral Mass will be held on Tuesday January 14, 2025 at 10am from St. Mary of the Nativity Church, 1 Kent Street, Scituate. Burial will be private.
