Born in South Weymouth, MA, Mary was the daughter of the late Matthew L. Brown Sr. and the late Catherine R. Welch. She was a lifelong resident of Scituate, MA, graduating from Scituate High School in 1964.
Mary was a stellar athlete growing up, playing field hockey and softball throughout her school years. She was known to regularly blast the softball over the fence while at bat and famously made the Scituate girls’ varsity high school softball team when she was in 8th grade. As an adult, Mary was an avid sports fan, supporting the Boston teams, especially the New England Patriots and Boston Red Sox, and enjoyed playing golf after her retirement.
Upon high school graduation she attended the Plus School of Business in Boston and went on to work at the Registry of Motor Vehicles in Boston until her retirement in 2003. Once retired, she drove a van for the Scituate Senior Center and made many friends with her easygoing smile and dry sense of humor.
Mary was a big Elvis fan and enjoyed traveling to warm destinations like California, Bermuda, and Hawaii and loved to gamble. She notoriously took her then 13-year-old niece, Mary Beth cross country, making a pit stop in Las Vegas, showing her the gambling ropes until they were politely asked to leave the famed hotel casino, Circus, Circus. Locally, she regularly made trips to Foxwoods and Plainridge Park Casino and had an uncanny ability to know which machines were hot during her visits.
As an aunt, Auntie Mary was known to always give the best Christmas presents to her nieces and nephews and ended each Christmas evening handing out lottery scratch tickets to her family, hoping each year someone would win big.
Mary is survived by her brother Matthew L. Brown Jr. (Larry) and his wife Rosemary (Rosie) of Scituate, sister Katherine (Kathy) Brown of Scituate, sister Margaret (Peggy) O’Halloran of Lexington - formerly of Plymouth, niece Mary Beth Brown of Scituate, Matthew L. Brown III and his wife Kate of Stoughton, Amy Rogan and her husband Pete of Hingham, Stephen O’Halloran and his wife Kendall of Canton, Kathleen (Kate) Armanetti and her husband David of Lexington, and Timothy O’Halloran and his wife Stacy of Plymouth along with many great nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, she is predeceased by her sister Judith (Judy) Brown and beloved dog Barney, the smartest dog that ever lived.
Visiting hours will be at the Richardson-Gaffey Funeral Home at 382 First Parish Road in Scituate on June 7th from 4-6 PM, followed by a brief service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Scituate Etrusco Associates.
