Born November 26, 1939 to Louis and Grace (Mello) Rose, Nancy grew up in New Bedford and graduated from New Bedford High School in 1957. On the dance floor, she met the love of her life, Raymond “Ray” Tavares. Their marriage of 64 years was truly one for the ages, beginning with their wedding in 1961 where they danced to local bands, Chicago, and Johnny Mathis.
Ray and Nancy began their married life in Fayetteville, NC, during Ray’s military service. They eventually made Boston their home, where Nancy thrived as a city girl who delighted in its culture, energy, and community. Later, they moved to Scituate to raise their family, but returned to Boston as soon as they could, where she felt most at home.
Nancy began her career in the radiology department at Mass General Hospital before earning her MSW from Boston University. She devoted much of her career to social work, serving for 15 years as Director of Family Support Programs at Boston Children’s Services. After leaving social work, she pursued a degree in Community Mental Health from Northeastern University, which led to a second career in higher education. She went on to serve for 15 years as Assistant Professor and Co-op Advisor at Northeastern’s College of Criminal Justice, where she inspired generations of students.
Nancy’s joys in life were as vibrant as her spirit. She loved music, chilled wine, dessert, and the occasional pomegranate martinis at Mohegan Sun. She delighted in a good show or dinner out and never missed a chance to dance. Throughout her life, she built lasting friendships through her work and community, bonds she cherished deeply. Above all, she treasured time with her family, especially her grandchildren, who brought her endless pride and joy.
She is survived by her devoted husband Raymond Tavares; her sons Peter (and Tammy), Matthew (and Julia), and Marc (and Anne) Tavares; her grandchildren Shawn (wife Erika), Alexandra (husband Nicholas), Deanna (husband Morgan), Madison, Michael, Benjamin, Andrew, and Lia; and her great-granddaughter Avery. She also leaves behind many beloved nieces, nephews, and friends.
A memorial service will be scheduled for a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family asks donations be made to NVNA and Hospice, 120 Longwater Dr, Norwell, MA 02061 or online at nvna.org
