
CORTEZ, Richard Francis, of Scituate at the age 84, lovingly known as "Bumpa", died surrounded by his family at Lifecare Center of the South Shore on Friday, December 10, 2010, following a long illness. He was born August 5, 1926, in the Town of Kingston. Richard is survived by his brother Harold also of Scituate, four loving children, son Richard Jr. of S.C., Brian and wife Donna of S.C., Cynthia Brown and husband Mack of Scituate and daughter Lisa Lauzon and her husband Tom of Whitman. He is further survived and adored by 10 grandchildren, Sarah and her husband Charlie Adams of Kingston, Richard III of S.C., Kathleen, Michael and Stephen Brown of Scituate, Jennifer Cortez of Rockland, Brian Cortez of S.C., and Chelsea, Matthew, Maxwell, Mitchell and Caitlyn of Whitman, and one great grandchild, Nathan. He was preceded in death by his parents Anthony and Florence, beloved wife, Lucinda and two sisters, Elizabeth and Mary. Richard cared for his loving wife Lucinda who was a stroke victim for over ten years. He ran a small lawn mower business from his house where he could care for his wife and also work. His positive upbeat attitude, gave him resilience and perseverance which carried him throughout his life. His wife, family and friends were always the main focus of his life. Family and people around him admired him for his concern for others while he faced his own medical challenges.
Richard was a Navy veteran of WWII who served in the Pacific aboard the Cleveland Class Light Cruiser USS Vincennes (CL-64); which was built in Fore River, Quincy, MA . Richard was very proud of his dedicated service to our country and wore his Navy cap as a reminder. A special thank you to the dedicated professional staff at Lifecare Center of the South Shore for their compassion and kindness during his time of need. Also, a special thank you to his many customers of his lawnmower business who became friends over time, you provided him with the ability to care for his wife and family from his home during his later years and to the thoughtful people who would think of him and bring him his favorite dishes of fish, lobster and clams over the years. The thoughts and care from all of you made his life more enjoyable! Friends and Relatives are invited to attend visiting hours on Thursday, Dec. 16th from 4PM-8PM. Funeral Service will be held at the Richardson-Gaffey Funeral Home, 382 First Parish Rd, Scituate on Friday, Dec. 17th at 10AM. Burial will be in Cudworth Cemetery, Scituate. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Life Care Center of the South Shore, 309 Driftway Road, Scituate, MA 02066 to the Attention of Mrs. Dorothy Cabozzi, Director Activities Department.
