Born in Dorchester, Massachusetts, he was the son of the late Archibald L. and Rita (Carrier) Smith.
Dick was a lifelong resident of Scituate, a community he proudly called home throughout his life. He entered the Navy in 1963 and went on to serve for 31 years, later retiring from the Navy Reserves. His years of service reflected his dedication, discipline and steady commitment to others.
In 1969, Dick met the love of his life, Dottie, while they were both working at Sears, across from Fenway Park. As the story is fondly told, Dottie caught Dick's eye while sitting at her desk, and he began tossing paper clips her way to get her attention. It worked, beginning a love story that would last a lifetime. Dick and Dottie shared 51 years of marriage before her passing in November 2022, building a life together rooted in love, devotion and family.
Dick was also a familiar and respected presence in the Scituate Community through his work with Tedeschi Food Shops. Beginning in 1981, he managed and owned the store serving the community with pride until his retirement in 2009. Through both his work and everyday presence, Dick became known as someone whose life was closely woven into the town he loved.
Dick had a deep love for music which remained one of the great joys of his life. He loved everything about it, especially collecting music records and sharing them with others. His passion even led him to work as a disc jockey, a role that reflected both his personality and the happiness he found in bringing music into people's lives.
Devoted Father of Brian Smith of Boston, Michael Smith of Scituate, and Christine Van Note and her husband Thomas of Naperville, Illinois.
Cherished grandfather of Abigail (Abby) and Caroline.
Loving brother of Rita Smith and the late Leo Smith
Dick will be remembered for his steady presence, his devotion to family, his years of military service, and the meaningful life he built in the community that was always home to him.
A visitation will be held from 3-7 pm on Wednesday, July 8, 2026, at Richardson-Gaffey Funeral Home, 382 First Parish Road, Scituate, Massachusetts. Burial services will be private
