Born on July 21, 1936, in Wilkinsburg, PA, Bob was the son of Ruth Phillips Rhen and Clarence Rhen. He was raised in Mount Lebanon, PA, where he graduated from Mount Lebanon High School in 1954. His early life was marked by academics, athletics, scouts, adventure and leadership. He went on to attend Michigan State University, graduating in 1958 with a degree in electrical engineering and later completing the Harvard Business School’s Advanced Management Program in 1976.
In 1959, Bob married his high school sweetheart, Sara Jane “Sally” Henry (deceased 2017). Together they built a life rooted in family, friendship, and faith, primarily in the Greensburg/Latrobe, PA area and later in Wilmington, NC.
Bob’s professional career spanned 50+ years, starting with Westinghouse Corporation, where he held 13 different roles over a 30+ year period. He was known as an early adopter—someone who embraced change, led with vision, and pursued meaningful results. Late in his career, he became a business development consultant for Multisystemic Therapy (MST) and Evidence-Based Associates (EBA), investing in solutions that supported youth and families. Beyond his professional work, Bob served his community through board involvement with the United Way, Scouting of America and Adelphoi.
Bob built lasting relationships and joyful memories with his extended family and a wide circle of friends. These experiences were shaped through times at annual family gatherings, his work, as well as involvement at St. Vincent Parish, Latrobe Country Club, Porters Neck Country Club, the Parkinson’s community of Rock Steady Boxing at 110 Fitness, and his assisted living community at The Current South Shore.
Wherever he was, Bob made his presence known. He connected through a firm handshake, remembered your name, and expressed his care through wit, sarcasm, and challenge. He was a “fixer” more than a “feeler,” yet beneath that was a rich layer of compassion and deep unwavering loyalty. In his free time, he especially enjoyed working in his yard, playing golf, reading, traveling, hosting a party and dining out with others.
He will be remembered by his children, Karen Rhen Hirsh (David Hirsh) and Brian Rhen (Missy Morrill Rhen); his grandchildren, Sadie Rhen Brust (Jerin Brust), Joshua Hirsh (Dr. Lexie Henriquez), Emma Rhen (deceased 2001), Max Hirsh, Elise Rhen Karahadian (Micah Karahadian), Noah Rhen, and Levi Rhen; and his brothers, Claude Rhen (Pat Gayton) and John Rhen.
A celebration of life gathering will be held at 12:00 PM on Friday, June 26, 2026 at 110 Fitness, 200B Weymouth Street, Rockland, MA, with a lunch reception onsite and an interment service at 10:00 AM on Friday, October 2, 2026 at St. Vincent Cemetery in Latrobe, PA, with a lunch reception at Latrobe Country Club, 346 Arnold Palmer Drive, Latrobe, PA 15650.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that memorial gifts be made to Rock Steady Boxing at 110 Fitness in Rockland, MA or Adelphoi in Latrobe, PA.
