

Roland Francis Smith, age 78, passed on April 19, 2012, surrounded by his loving family. Born and raised in Wilmington, MA; Roland resided in Scituate with his family for the past 50 years. Roland is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Eleanore L. (Martin). Devoted and beloved father of his children; the late Stephen F.; Kathleen Grant and her husband Mark of Raynham, Laureen Moss and her husband Kelly of Peabody, David F. Smith and his wife Kimberly of Pembroke, Kevin F. Smith of Quincy, and Jennifer Coviello and her husband Frederick of Whitman. Roland is the cherished grandfather of Kaitlin, Kassandra, Andrew, David Jr., and great-granddaughter Emily. Beloved brother of Ella Efraimson, Barbara Cleveland, and Douglas of Wilmington, MA; Lester of Sebastian, FL; Shirley Boyer of Cambridge Springs, PA; and sister-in-law Nona Martin of Sandwich, MA. Roland also leaves behind many cousins, nieces, nephews and a multitude of friends. An avid golfer and outdoors person, Roland was a long time member of Scituate Country Club and was instrumental in the development of the Scituate Recreation Department. Roland participated in many charitable and civic organizations including the Lions Club, Rotary Club, and Protestant Guild for the Blind where he acted as Chairperson for their annual golf tournament. He enjoyed wood-working, tending to his yard and home, and spending time with his family and friends. Roland recently retired after a prestigious 60 year career in the insurance industry starting as a rater and culminating in his role as Vice President at Marchionne Insurance Agency in Quincy, where he spent the last 44 years. He enjoyed working for his many clients and with coworkers and friends of the agency. In addition to his lengthy career, Roland served eight years with the U.S. Army Reserve during the Korean Conflict. Relatives and friends are invited to pay their respects during viewing hours from 4 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Monday, April 23 at the Richardson-Gaffey Funeral Home, 382 First Parish Rd. in Scituate, and a funeral Mass to be celebrated Tuesday, April 24 at 10 a.m. at Saint Mary of the Nativity in Scituate Harbor. Interment will take place in St. Marys Cemetery in Scituate.
