She was born August 31,1929 in Norristown, PA the daughter of Daniel and Alta (Richards)
Hemmig. She attended schools in Norristown, PA graduating from Norristown High School in
1947. Shirley attended nursing school in 1947 at Bryn Mawr Hospital, graduating in 1950. She
met and married her husband, Sandy in Norristown, PA where they had 6 children, all boys,
within 12 years. They moved to Scituate, Massachusetts in August 1969 for a job opportunity for
Sandy. Shirley was a two time breast cancer survivor and received treatments at Dana Farber
Cancer Center. Shirley was a survivor in every way and a constant source of strength for her
family.
Shirley was a member of the Harbor United Methodist Church in Scituate for over 50 years
participating in the choir as well many events that went on at the church including working the
jewelry table at the Ye Olde Village Fair. She was a long time member of the South Shore
Registered Nurses Association, serving as secretary for many years. Shirley was a stay at home
mother who cared for her boys, and once they grew up cared for the children of several families
in the Scituate and Cohasset area.
Shirley enjoyed old Western TV shows, needlework, and caring for flowers both inside and
outside. Shirley loved pets including her beloved chocolate lab, Max.
Shirley was predeceased by her husband, Howard Sanford (Sandy) Lynam, (June 2015) of 62
years, her eldest son Thomas Daniel Lynam (August, 2020, Scituate, MA), her fifth son Edward
Bennett Lynam, (February 2015, Golden, CO), as well as her brothers and sisters Daniel
Hemmig, Richard (Dick) Hemmig, Dorothy Hemmig, Sarah (Hemmig) DeStefano and Elmer
Hemmig. She is survived by her remaining children, James and his wife Teresa Lynam of
Kirkland, WA, Frank Lynam of Olympia, WA, John and his wife Pamela Lynam of Belmont,
Maine and Richard Lynam of Plymouth, MA. She has several grandchildren who were a
constant joy to her. Hannah, Maxwell, Ben, Jake, Abby, Harrison and Emma.
The family would like to sincerely thank Sue Lovering and Judy Ward for all the care that they
gave to Shirley in the last few years, her many friends from the area, as well as the doctors and
nurses that cared for her in her last days.
A service will be held July 23, 2023 at 2 PM at the Harbor United Methodist Church in Scituate
with Christina Longman officiating. Internment will be at a later date in Pennsylvania.
