Bilbo, Stephen - Age 86, of Scituate, passed away December 2, 2018 after a long illness. He was a son of the late John and Alice Bilbo of Dorchester. Loving father of Stephen Bilbo and his wife Mary Anne of North Scituate, RI, Cynthia Combes and her husband George of Londonderry, NH, Laura Raftery and her husband Kevin of Rockland, MA and Matthew Bilbo of Duxbury, MA. Stephen will be lovingly remembered by his long time companion Rita MacNeil. He is survived by his sister Alice Fletcher of FL, and was predeceased by brothers John, Thomas, and Paul.

Stephen proudly served in the United States Air Force for 5 years. Upon his return to civilian life, he worked briefly with the New England Telephone Company. He was an entrepreneur his whole life. He and his brother built custom homes throughout the South Shore for the next 20 years. In the mid-70’s into the 80’s, Stephen opened and ran The Tinkers Dam restaurant in Pembroke. Later in life, he opened Bilbo’s Bargain Barn, in Pembroke. He always had the kind of energy and spirit typical of a much younger man. Stephen had an engaging personality, .and the remarkable ability to start a conversation with anyone he met. He knew someone practically everywhere. Stephen was a masterful storyteller, and loved telling people about his adventures growing up in Dorchester, his days in the Air Force, and his travels around the country and the world.

Above all else, Stephen had a profound love for his family. He cared deeply for them, and was very proud of his children and grandchildren. He was always moving, always on the go, and never was one to rest, give up, or call it quits... until the very end. The many people whose lives he touched along the way will remember and miss him always.,

Steve is listed in my mind as one of the few unforgettable characters I have known in my lifetime. Although we were a mere nine years apart, Steve unknowingly taught me quite a few tricks of the trade, some of which I would most likely never have discovered on my own.
I first met Steve in 1990 and we remained lifetime friends. We had several disagreements (especially about his searching for his ringing phone while continuing to drive on highways) or his "don't worry, I know the road", which would go around in circles; instead of using my GPS. He really knew the roads however, his mind was overloaded with things he had to do.
I will miss you Steve but I've a feeling you'll be in my mind for a long long time.
Tell Rosie I said Hello.

Love from Franca and our daughters who also miss you.
