

Edward M. Newland, 56, of Gering, NE died Friday, April 25, 2008 at Regional West Medical Center in Scottsbluff. Many family members were with Ed at his passing. Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, Aapril 29, 2008 at the Mitchell Berean Church with Pastor Giles Armstrong officiating. At his request, Ed’s remains have been cremated. Ed was born January 15, 1952 in Lorain, Ohio, graduated from high school in 1970. He attended Pratt Junior College in Kansas and Colorado State University in Fort Collins, playing football at both schools. He earned his B. S. degree in education from C.S.U. in 1978 and his Masters in Guidance Counseling from Chadron State College in 1993. He was an active member of Banner County Education Association, NSEA, and NEA. For 29 years, he served students as a teacher, coach, and guidance counselor for Banner County Schools in Harrisburg, NE. He was gifted with technology and developed the first web page for BCHS. He loved camping in the Colorado rocky Mountains and following the musical and athletic careers of his children. He worked diligently each year to help students obtain scholarships for post-secondary educational pursuits. A personal note to all his students: “Protect the cone.” Ed and his family lived in Harrisburg for 16 years and this enabled him to serve on the Banner County Fire Department. He received the Nebraska State Education Association’s Community Service Award for his volunteer work with Banner County’s Fire Department in 1991. Ed is survived by Carol, his wife of 32 years, son Phil Newland; son Wm. Paul Newland (fiance Jade Roper), siblings Rosemary Newland, Geri Brundle, Larry Newland, and Robert Newland; Foster parents Robert and Jeannie Larson, mother –in-law Norene Rannells, brothers Bob Larson (Barb), Bill Larson (Linda), and sister Beth Sunds (Martin), brothers-in-law Mark (Becky) Rannells, and Bob (Suzanne) Rannells, many nephews, nieces, extended family and friends. Preceding him in death were his father Frances Newland, mother Elise Newland Barnes, and step father Roland Barnes, grandparents Harry and Esther Larson and Harry and Marguerite Bassett.
