

Elmer George Cook, 87, of Scottsbluff met his Lord and Savior on Friday, January 10, 2014. He passed at Regional West Medical Center in Scottsbluff. Funeral services will be Tuesday, January 14, 2014 at 1:00 p.m. at Emmanuel Congregational Church in Scottsbluff with Pastors Jim Rowe and Troy Allen officiating. Interment will follow at Fairview Cemetery in Scottsbluff with military rites conducted by the Nebraska Army National Guard. Elmer was born November 23, 1926 in Scottsbluff, NE to George and Olinda (Grasmick) Cook. He grew up and received his education at Victory Hill Rural School and Scottsbluff High School. He entered the U. S. Army during the Korean Conflict stationed at Ft. Carson, Colorado Springs, Colorado. Upon his honorable discharge he returned to Scottsbluff. On June 3, 1951 he married his love Virginia M. Becker and began their passion to farm. He raised numerous crops, fed cattle, and was always willing to help friends and neighbors during planting and harvest time. Elmer retired in 1995 and continued in agriculture until the last two years. Elmer was an active member of the Morrill Presbyterian Church where he served on many committees. Upon moving to Scottsbluff he became an active member of Emmanuel Congregational Church where he sang in the choir. He was a long-time member of the Elks Lodge #1367 and Legacy of the Plains Museum of Gering and past member in the Morrill American Legion. Elmer loved golfing and provided advice to all who played the course with him. He enjoyed rebuilding his antique John Deere Tractor 730, playing cards in numerous card clubs, and spending time with family and friends. He is survived by his wife Virginia of 62 years, children Jana (Mike) Longoria, Scottsbluff, NE; Gordon (Tina) Cook, Scottsbluff, NE and Renee (Rick) Griffith, Casper, WY; grandchildren Zachary (Bobbi) Johnson, Trevor (Lindsey) Johnson, Court (fiancé Leslie Baer) Cook, Meghan (T. J. Krajewski) Cook, Alexis Cook, Morgan Griffith, Austin Griffith; great grandchildren, Tristen, Landen and Ella Johnson; step grandchildren Andrea Longoria, Michael (Serenity) Longoria; step great grandchildren Tallon and Bianca McDonald and Jaydan Longoria. Elmer was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Eugene Cook. A memorial has been established to Emmanuel Congregational Church, 4100 Avenue B, Scottsbluff, NE 69361.
