

Gary E. Lane, 81, of Scottsbluff, died peacefully Sunday, September 21, 2014 at the Western Nebraska Veterans Home in Scottsbluff surrounded by his family. His funeral service will be held at 10 AM on Saturday, September 27, 2014 at Dugan-Kramer Funeral Chapel with Pastor Lyle Hinebauch officiating. Interment will be at Sunset Memorial Park with military honors by United States Navy Honor Guard and Gering American Legion Post #36 Color Guard. Visitation will be from 1-7 PM Friday, September 26, 2014 at Dugan-Kramer Funeral Chapel in Scottsbluff. Memorials may be given to Central Church of Christ in Gering. Gary was born September 8, 1933 at Scottsbluff, Nebraska the son of Bond and Katherine (Brester) Lane. He attended schools in Gering, Montana, and Denver. He married Phyllis Leathers on August 8, 1953 in Bridgeport. He worked at Lockwood Graders in Gering for three years as well as at Mac’s Club in Scottsbluff as a floor manager before answering the call to duty. He enlisted in the United States Navy on January 13, 1955. He served on four different ships and was primarily a machinist. Gary and Phyllis made their home across the United States from Virginia to California during his during his military career. Gary received an honorable discharge from active duty on January 15, 1974 and the couple returned to the area. Gary returned to Lockwoods as general foreman and then owned and operated the Texaco station in Mitchell for many years. They traveled extensively for ten years, “camping” at Hart Ranch in South Dakota during the summers and wintering in Florida.
Gary was a member of the Central Church of Christ in Gering, Order of the Eastern Star Sunflower Chapter #214 in Mitchell, and the Mitchell Masonic Lodge #263 A.F. & A.M. In his younger years, Gary was a Boy Scout leader. Gary loved to visit with everyone and enjoyed watching football and old movies. He was a loving husband, loved all three of his children, and was a great friend to many.
He is survived by his wife Phyllis of Scottsbluff; sons Scott and wife Julie Lane of Mitchell and Curtis Lane of Denver, CO; daughter Kathleen Fawcett of Denver, CO; his grandchildren, Ryan & Christopher Lane and Josh (Hanna) and Skylar Fawcett; and nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and an infant brother.
