Helen Irene Schaffer Bastron, 89, of Scottsbluff, passed away February 20, 2017 at her home. At her request, cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held at 1:00 pm on Saturday, February 25, 2017 at Plymouth Congregational Church in Scottsbluff with Pastor Jeremy Skaggs officiating. Helen was born March 9, 1927 in Bayard, to Fred and Christine (Schlauger) Schaffer. As a small child the family moved to Grand Junction, Colorado and on to Montrose, Colorado. Helen started school in Montrose, Colorado and finished at Minatare School.
Helen was united in marriage to Adolph Bastron on November 5, 1950.
At age 55, Helen went back to school and received her GED. From there she went to nursing school in Alliance and became an LPN. As an LPN, Helen worked at Chimney Rock Villa, Northfield Villa, and Western Nebraska Veterans Home. From there she was a travelling nurse working in Cheyenne, Wyoming and Fort Collins, Colorado, before retiring at the age of 75.
Helen and Adolph had three children, Paulette (Gary) Little of Bayard, Fred (Pat) Bastron of Scottsbluff, and Pam (Terry) Carrier of Scottsbluff. Helen also had ten grandchildren, Jeff (Lisa) Little, Becky (Jared) Clauss, Chris (Stephanie) Little all of Des Moines, Iowa, Brandon (Kristie) Little of Harrisburg, Troy (Patty) Little of Minatare, Taylor (Ashley) Carrier of Kearney, Tonya (Joe) Gargotta of Lee’s Summit, Missouri, Kayla (Thomas) Rizza of Ogallala, Candace (DJ) Garcia of Scottsbluff, and Lysa (Rudy) Jenkins of Gering, and fourteen great-grandchildren. Helen was also survived by brother Walter Schaffer of Bayard, and sister Sally Heintz of Overland Park, Kansas.
Helen was preceded in death by her parents, Fred and Christine Schaffer, husband Adolph, sisters LaVonne Ott, Eileen Pierce, and infant grandson Chad Lee Little.
