Jerry Lee Green, age 80, of Gering passed away on June 16, 2026, at The Residency at Northfield in Scottsbluff, Nebraska, where he spent the final five months of his life. The family will forever be grateful to the staff who cared for him there, as well as to the staff at Emerald Court, where he resided previously.
Jerry was born on January 3, 1946, in Scottsbluff, Nebraska, to Henry Green and Esther Heimbouch. After his parents’ divorce, he lived with his father and attended Centennial High School in Portland, Oregon, before returning to Nebraska to live with his mother. He attended Bayard High School, where he met his future wife, Linda Beth Pierce. They were married on January 17, 1964, at Salem Congregational Church in Bayard, Nebraska. Together, they raised three sons: Shawn, Scott, and Seth.
Jerry and Linda farmed with the family, first in Nebraska and later in Idaho. During their years in Idaho, they enjoyed annual family vacations to the Oregon coast. In 1989, Jerry and Linda moved their boys back home to the Cornhusker State, where they became co-owners of Valley Sanitation. They traded Idaho farmland for Chimney Rock sunsets and coastal vacations for Nebraska football season tickets. Valley Sanitation was in 1997, though Jerry continued working for the company until his retirement in 2000.
Jerry will be remembered for his fiercely competitive nature, his inability to sit still for long, and his playful heckling. If you were among those he called “turkey,” you can rest assured that you were one of his favorites. Jerry and Linda enjoyed hosting Nebraska game-day parties, gathering with friends for weekly pinochle games, and playing progressive rummy with family. When it came to cards, Jerry rarely lost.
Jerry was preceded in death by his father and stepmother, Henry and Anne Green; his mother and stepfather, Esther and Hank Schmick; parents-in-law, Natalie “Dolly” and Noland Pierce; and sister, Colleen “Sue” Huls.
He is survived by his wife, Linda Green; brothers, Henry Green, Harley Schmick, James Schmick, and Robert (Debbie) Schmick; brother-in-law, Doug (Sue) Huls; sister-in-law, Charlotte (Donald “Don”) Landrigan; sons, Shawn (Richelle) Green, Scott (Janal) Green, and Seth (Michaelia) Green; eleven grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Memorial services for Jerry will be held at Community Bible Church in Bayard, Nebraska, on Tuesday, June 23, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. with Pastor Brad Kihlthau officiating. The family invites those in attendance to celebrate Jerry’s life by wearing their favorite fan gear in honor of his love for the Cornhuskers.
