One of the greatest thrills to my Grandpa was the “everyday except Monday” delivery of the Scottsbluff Star Herald.
Everything he needed to “have a good day” this daily print provided.
The Front Page: The “what’s, why’s and why not’s” in the community, county, and state that he was born, raised and proud to call home his entire life.
He was born on July 24th, 1922 to John & Katie (Messman) Arends in the Sandhills of Nebraska. He was one of five boys and two girls raised in Mullen until they moved to the panhandle town of Minatare just before turning 16.
The World: He was drafted and served in the U.S. Army to defend our Star Spangled Banner, as well as our many freedoms. Private Arends charged the beaches of Normandy. His devotion to his family brought the WWII veteran home to the America he loved. He spent the remainder of his life celebrating and passionately living his faith.
Bro. Arends was the member and Deacon that you could count on and sealed with a firm hand shake.
Uncle Johnny loved his many nieces and nephews.
Weather: Sunshine days yielded a perfectly groomed lawn. Rain provided heavenly ingredients for his Martha Stewart worthy garden & blue ribbon winning tomatoes.
A hard working man with hardworking hands.
Mr. Arends made a sweet life at Great Western Sugar Factory. He shared his sweet life with his very sweet wife, Eunice Loutzenhiser Arends.
Sports: Printed year around coverage of his Nebraska Cornhuskers.
Classifieds, Coupons & Crosswords: Simple reminders to work hard, spend less and take time to keep a mind sharp.
Obits: Certain obituaries brought intense heartache and pure heartbreak to Dad Arends. His faith in God rendered perseverance to keep his mind strong as his wife and all three of his daughters made heaven their home before he was ready to let them go. Delores Arends Laursen, Valorie Arends Maul and Jolene Arends Swartwood.
My Grandpa would always say... “I woke up this morning and my name wasn’t in the paper, so I guess I’m doing good.” 07/24/1922-04/09/2016 There is something very special about your name being in the Sunday Star Herald... Hymn time country style while getting dressed in Sunday’s best.
Not only did he have good days, he had a good life.
Left here to celebrate his life, love and legacy: 5 grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren and 1 great great grandson.
