

Lola Faye (Luttrell) Shires was born November 16, 1933, in Hammon, Oklahoma. Her parents were Floyd Jackson and Sarah Alice “Allie” (Hammack) Luttrell. Lola joined two brothers, Cleo and J.D. Share cropping and the Great Depression forced the family to take their few possessions and a Model T to live with an uncle in Sterling, Colorado. Her father found employment and a home with three rooms and a path.
Lola started school at the age of four and graduated with honors in 1951. In high school, she was involved in sports and was the President of G.A.A. whereby she received six awards in three years for her letter sweater. She was also in the Honor Society for two years along with Quill and Scroll. Lola loved roller skating and was an avid skater. In August of 1952, she married John Shires, her skating partner of three years. They continued skating together until her first daughter, Dorothy Faye, was born in Sterling, Colorado, April 3, 1955.
Lola’s husband, John, was employed by CBN&Q Railroad and forced to move with the family to Alliance, Nebraska in September of 1961. Lola enjoyed bowling until her second daughter, Dawn Marie, was born, April 23, 1964. Her daughters were the love of her life.
When her husband passed away in 1992, Lola began working at Taco Johns for the next 23 years. She was honored with an award for going, (Above and Beyond), from Taco Johns. A management team from Cheyenne, Wyoming, presented her with an inscribed lapel pin. Lola joined R.S.V.P. and in 2017, she received her 25 year pin for 25 years of volunteering.
While working at Taco Johns with five different shades of purple walls, working in a purple uniform, Lola decided to dye her hair purple in 1998. Thus, becoming known as The Purple Haired Lady.
Lola was known to KCOW listeners as the Birthday Lady. She worked countless hours keeping track of birthdays and called KCOW listeners to recognize those birthdays. She recognized over thousands of birthdays each year.
She was a member of the Presbyterian Church and an avid supporter of St. John’s Lutheran Church.
She is survived by her daughter Dot (Gary) Haberlan, granddaughter, Katie, great granddaughters Gracie and Imani of Steamboat Springs, Colorado and daughter, Dawn Land of Littleton, Colorado. She is also survived by niece, Connie Jo Luttrell of Mesa, Arizona. She is also survived by her adopted Son, Travis Collins of Hershey, Nebraska and her adopted daughters Karen Trussell of Alliance, Nebraska and Marti Schleicher of Alliance, Nebraska.
Lola was very proud and grateful for her family.
She was preceded in death by her parents, brothers, sister-in-law, her husband and sister-in-law Arlene Luttrell.
Lola Faye (Luttrell) Shires, 92 of Alliance, Nebraska passed away peacefully with her family by her side, Monday, April 27, 2026, at Box Butte General Hospital in Alliance. Nebraska.
