Lydia (Henkel) Schmall, 93, of Bayard, formerly of Scottsbluff, passed away on Sunday, November 25, 2018 at Chimney Rock Villa with her daughter by her side. She was born May 19, 1925 at Bayard, Nebraska to Phillip and Mary (Wise) Henkel. She was united in marriage to Harry Schmall at Hope Congregational Church in Bayard on March 11, 1945. The couple lived and farmed north of Bayard until moving to Scottsbluff in 1975.

Lydia worked as a cook for Scottsbluff high School for five years, the Western Nebraska Veterans Home for 9 ½ years, and the Head Start Migrant School at Bayard for several summers. She enjoyed crocheting and embroidery work making many unique gifts for everyone. She also enjoyed gardening, reading, baking, and cooking. Many of her recipes were memorized. She was an avid Nebraska Cornhusker fan and also a great Denver Broncos fan as she loved watching some of the games on the television and attended several of their games as well. Lydia attended all of the grandchildren’s activities from pre-school thru high school.

God Bless our Dear Friend Lydia!

It has been awhile since i was in Nebraska, however I will never forget Aunt Lydia's laugh and hugs I would get when I was younger! Also as Joyce and Russ got together how much he did for her but how lenient she was to such a pill LOL. Aunt Lydia, you finally get to be with Uncle Harry, love you.
