Myrtle Inez Nation, 93, of Gering, died Thursday, January 28, 2010 at Heritage Estates in Gering. Memorial services will be 2:00 p.m. Sunday, January 31, 2010 at Heritage Estates Chapel. A memorial has been established to Heritages Estates Activity Center. Myrtle was born May 11, 1916 to Roy and Alice Mitchell of Lisco, NE. She grew up there in the Sand Hills south of Lisco with three brothers and three sisters. In 1934 she married Alfred Neil Walker, a widower living in Broadwater, NE and helped raise three step sons. In 1939 the family sold out and moved out west to start a new life. They bought land and settled in Homedale, ID where they were able to build a home and farm with a small dairy business. They had two daughters. In 1951 this marriage was dissolved. She later married Elmer Clements and lived in Caldwel, ID and vicinity for several years where she worked in Kings Variety Store. Later, they moved to Boise, ID for a few years where she worked at Albertsons. One daughter was born to them. The family later moved to Wilder, ID in 1961 where she worked for the Wilder School District. She cooked for the school lunch program until she retired. A few years after Elmer’s death, she married L. L. (Toby) Nation, October 29, 1979. Toby and Myrtle sold out and moved to Gering, NE that year to be close to her family and to help care for her mother. Toby and Myrtle were involved in many interesting activities and endeavors throughout their twenty-eight years together. They helped family and friends with farming and ranch work. They made a little hobby into a small neighborhood business they called “Toby’s Trunks”. Toby repaired and finished the outside portion and “Mert” made the insides beautiful. She loved to sew and spent many hours making quilts and doll clothes and crocheting Afghans. She and Toby could be seen most weekends at auctions and yard sales that they loved to go to. In 1999 Myrtle had a stroke which left her unable to continue doing the crafts and activities that she loved so much. She has resided at Heritage Estates in Gering for the past several years. Surviving members of her family are: stepson James (Rosemary) Walker, Colorado Springs, CO; daughters: Elsie (George) Sprague, Richland, MO and Mary (Maynard) Kirstine, Garden Valley, Idaho; 11 grandchildren, 30 great grandchildren and many great-great grandchildren.
