Paul D. Grubb, aged 76, died July 28, 2021 at his home in Anchor Point, Alaska, of an apparent diabetes-related heart attack.
A 1967 graduate of Penn State University, Paul joined the U.S. Air Force after his graduation, completed Officer Training School, and entered Flight School at Moody Air Force Base in Valdosta, Georgia. Upon becoming a pilot, he was assigned to fly KC-135 refueling tankers at K. I. Sawyer AFB in Marquette, Michigan. In 1971-72, Paul flew helicopters in Southeast Asia with the Air Rescue and Recovery Squadron.
After returning home, he ranched with his father, Paul D. Grubb Sr., for a time, then went to work for the Parks and Recreation Department in the city of Powell, Wyoming, eventually becoming Superintendent of Parks. In 1985, Paul and his family moved to Anchor Point, Alaska on the Kenai Peninsula near Homer, Alaska and Cook Inlet. There, he rebuilt and remodeled a home and did photography for a small newspaper in partnership with his wife, Roberta, a writer.
He was also a bush pilot for Cook Inlet Aviation in Homer before going to work for the Federal Aviation Administration as a flight service specialist. Just prior to joining the FAA, he earned certification as a flight engineer. Paul retired from the FAA in 2007. Paul and Roberta purchased a home in Torrington, Wyoming in 2018, intending to eventually become snowbirds, dividing their time between both states.
An outdoorsman, Paul loved hunting and shooting sports, holding trophies in trap and skeet and winning a state benchrest championship. While in Wyoming, he was a member of the National Guard competition shooting team, attending events around the U.S. He was a member of the American Legion.
He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Roberta; his two sons and their wives, Paul III & Carolyn Grubb and Ellis & Amy Grubb; his six grandchildren, Adeleine, Brendan, Anya, Evan, Sophia, and Evelyn Grubb; his two brothers, Mike (and wife Cindy) and Jim Grubb; his two sisters, Nancy Grubb and Betty Grubb Farr; his brother-in-law, Dave Johnson; and long-time friends Arnie Kremer and Robert Farr.
