Virginia (Hernandez) Alvarez

Virginia (Hernandez) Alvarez, 84, of Minatare, passed away peacefully with her family by her side, on Friday, April 3, 2009. Funeral services will be held Friday, April 10th at 10:00 AM at Dugan Kramer Chapel with Pastor Carolyn Dickinson officiating. Friends may visit from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., Thursday at the funeral home. The Virginia Alvarez memorial fund has been established. Virginia was born May 21, 1924 in Oak Creek, Colorado, the daughter of Alberto and Anna (De La Torre) Hernandez. She moved to Minatare at an early age where she attended school. She married Manuel Alvarez on March 5, 1940 in Harrisburg, Nebraska. Manuel and Virginia had 69 beautiful years together. She devoted her life raising 6 children and keeping her family close. Virginia was an active member of the Presbyterian Church, the Presbyterian women’s group, the county Election Board for 20 years, the Canasta Club, the American Legion Auxiliary for 65 years, and for the past 20 years, was a committed foster grandparent for the Minatare schools. She will be remembered for her unparalleled generosity, lightheartedness, savory cooking and infectious humor. Virginia touched many lives—children, adults, families and friends—as she reached out with her motherly influence and deep devotion. Virginia is survived by her husband Manuel, sons Robert and wife Nancy Alvarez of Patterson, CA; Bill Alvarez of Bridgeport, NE; Manuel ""Junior"" and wife Carla Alvarez of Gering, NE; Andrew and wife Connie Alvarez of Kennesaw, GA; Timothy and wife Lori Alvarez of Seward, NE; daughters Rachel Alvarez and Arleen Olguin of Minatare, NE; grandchildren (Dana, Rob, Kris, Theresa, Scott, Tracy, Jon, Brooks, Nicole, Ashley, Shanley, Alexia, Josh, Jason, Tiff) and great-grandchildren (Vince, Jordyn, Logan, Jayden, Tara, Saije, Jay, Tayler, Henry, Annamarie, Milo, June, Liannah, Kendall, Eva). Virginia was preceded in death by her parents, one grandson (Tommy), and three sisters (Bea, Rebecca, Anna). Virginia will be missed dearly by her family and her many friends.
