Barbara Joy McMann of Garland, Texas, passed away on October 29, 2025 in Forney, Texas. She will always be remembered as a kind and loving person to all that knew her. She was born on September 10, 1951 in Dallas, Texas to Joy (Hill) Flach and Charles Henry Flach. Barbara graduated from David W. Carter High School in Dallas in 1969.
Barbara worked for Garland Independent School District for the majority of her career, most notably as the secretary at O’Banion Middle School from 1996-2014. In addition to running the office, she was a constant source of joy, humor and encouragement for countless faculty, students and parents through the years. Her volunteer work included serving as PTA president at Southgate Elementary, president of her Sunday school class at First United Methodist Church in Garland, and Baby Cuddler at Medical City Dallas. Throughout her life, she was active in church. She was a member of Grace Fellowship Church in Sunnyvale, then later Cornerstone Rockwall Church, often volunteering in the nursery. Most recently she attended Mustang Creek Community Church in Forney with her daughter-in-law Rachel.
After her retirement, Barbara joined Youth with a Mission in Montana and traveled to Romania to spread her love of Jesus to people in need. She also regularly traveled to be with her sister Lucy in Colorado, hiking, swimming, and exploring outdoors. Camping in state parks with her brother Bob was a new experience out of her comfort zone that she quickly grew to love. Family get-togethers were the most important thing for Barbara. Friends and family probably remember spending time with Barbara eating Tex-Mex, hitting up some thrift stores, or working puzzles while watching the Price is Right. Having sleepovers and dinner at Cici’s Pizza with her granddaughters Hannah, Esther, and Rebekah gave her tremendous joy.
When asked about her accomplishments in life, Barbara said she was most proud of being a mother. She wasn’t just a mother to her own children. She was often called “mom” after providing long-term childcare to her friends’ children, loving and caring for coworkers like family, and opening her home to people who needed a place to stay. Barbara loved to help people, and she rarely passed up an opportunity to do so. She also treasured her role as a lola (grandmother in Filipino), and asked her granddaughters to call her Lola B.
Barbara is survived by son David McMann, Jr. (Rachel), daughter Liz McMann (Mike), grandchildren Hannah, Esther, Rebekah, Skyler and Griffin, brother Bob Flach (Beverly), brother Bill Flach (Anne), sister Lucy Allen (Curtis), and nieces/nephews Kevin, Robert, David, Sarah Elizabeth, John, Mary, Wesley, Lisa, Lucy, Chuck, and Deanna. She was preceded in death by her father Charles Flach, mother Joy Flach, and sister Becky Sampson (Tom).
Her family will be forever grateful to the kind people at Three Forks/Pegasus Landing Assisted Living and Dignity Hospice for caring for Barbara.
