The worst part of getting older, to me, is losing more and more of the people who played important roles in my life. One by one, they're leaving this mortal coil, and taking with them any thoughts I had of getting back together with them "some day."

I was so sorry to hear that old friend Calvin Travers passed away. I first met Calvin through my dad, who became friends with him through Daddy's work at the City of Seagoville. Then when I also went to work for the city, and later ran for and was elected to the city council, and got involved in a myriad of city activities and events, Calvin was always a part of all that.

Like me, he volunteered a lot of his time for community causes. He was on the Planning & Zoning commission and various other city committees and boards, and then later served as mayor; he was president of the Chamber of Commerce when I was on that board; we were both charter members and officers when the city started its Kiwanas club -- to name a few. Stella was the realtor who sold us our home on Hitt Street. Both of them were important members of what I still think of as my "Seagoville family."

I was told Calvin passed away in his sleep. Just like my Daddy. Daddy always enjoyed visiting with Calvin, so I hope they're sitting Up There with a cup of coffee and having a great conversation - probably about city politics - right now.

Calvin's death causes me to look back at the memories of a time in my life that in some ways seems eons ago and in other ways seems like just yesterday. The person I was then is not who I am now -- but she contained the seeds and laid the foundation for the person I've become. And Calvin was one of the many good people in my life back then who helped to shape the future (now present) me. He will be missed.

My fondest memories of Calvin were during our Elementary school years. We were best of friends (and cousins) and lived only blocks apart - so we were together a lot. Calvin, or Lonnie as I knew him in our younger years, was a kind- hearted person who achieved much in his life. He was a good person.
