Charlie was born March 7, 1940, in Killeen, Texas to Mary Gayle Ledger Smith and Herman Preston Smith. Shortly after the family moved to Temple, Texas. Charlie grew up between Kleberg and Temple. He graduated from Temple High School and went on to spend a year at Temple Junior College before starting his life-long career as a salesman. When not working, Smitty loved sports and spending time with family and friends. He was active in the local youth sporting community in both Seagoville and Crandall, coaching teams and later refereeing Little Dribblers. He was a former City Council Member for Seagoville. His love of sports extended to golf, basketball, football, tennis, bowling, and baseball. He was a lifelong Texas Rangers fan and was proud to see them win the 2023 World Series.
Charlie touched many lives through his time. He recounted his recent reunion with his "Bad Company" softball team. Once he entered the assisted living, Charlie always had visitors, friends, family, and clients alike. He was active in the lives of his children and bonus children, as well as his nieces and nephews, attending their sporting events and games.
