Helen Marie Nuckolls Barton passed into the eternal love of the Lord on June 20, 2019 at the age of 85 after suffering from a long illness. She was born on April 7, 1934 in Augusta, Arkansas to Doc Adolph Garrett and Ila Marie Ladd Garrett and grew up in northern Arkansas until she married. Helen lived in Arkansas and California before settling in Texas in the mid 1950s. She raised five children, was the matriarch of her family, and had a long successful career at Baylor Hospital.
Helen worked at Baylor Hospital as a supervisor in Central Services for over thirty years. Despite only having an 11th grade education, she played a critical role in preventing infection by sterilizing, assembling, storing, and distributing medical supplies. Helen oversaw all hospital activity surrounding supplies and equipment needed for surgery and patient care. She excelled in her role and was a favorite amongst surgeons at the hospital because of her strict attention to detail.
Helen loved the holidays, crafting, and spending time with her family. She was a strong willed and independent woman who strived to live life on her own terms. Family was her greatest joy and by loved ones she was affectionately known as “MawMaw.” She loved to cook, she loved to play games, and she loved the daily commentary from her family. She thrived on these regular exchanges and was lovingly referred to as the family “news reporter” due to her daily calls to family members to warn them about the weather, update them on family events and gossip, and to simply make sure everyone was okay and doing well. She is survived by her daughter Peggy Marie Huff and her husband Michael Huff, son Ronald Lee Nuckolls and his wife Shirley Kustiner, son Roy Clifton Nuckolls and his wife Donna Marie Nuckolls, son Garrett Dean Nuckolls and his wife Cindy Nuckolls and daughter Tara Leah Youngblood and her husband Kyle Youngblood. Her legacy will continue as she is also survived by numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was a woman of faith and loved serving others and was cherished by her family and friends. Her indomitable spirit encouraged those around her to persist in the face of struggles. Her love for her family will be her everlasting legacy and she will be missed, but not forgotten.
