Mr. James Bryan Oakley was a natural leader whose winning presence allowed him to take control of various situations with ease. Equipped with a clear and calculating focus, he possessed a tough-minded, “take charge” attitude. He had the ability to make even routine situations seem exciting because of his humorous personality.
James was born on February 14, 1930 at home, in a log cabin in Martins Mill, TX (Van Zandt County). His parents were Luther & Edna Oakley. James was raised in Martins Mill & China Grove, TX. Always able to express himself and rarely met a stranger. Armed with a great wit, James was optimistic in his outlook on life. He valued strong family relationships and enjoyed the simple things.
James was raised with five siblings. He had one older sister Willie Jo, 2 younger brothers, Dwight and Dwain, 2 younger sisters, Betty and Mary.
James became an Army veteran after being drafted into the Korean war. He worked as a truck driver most of his life and retired from Cox Fence Industries.
James married, Jo Ann Dawson, the sweetheart of his life on August 16, 1952.
James and Jo Ann were blessed with seven children, five daughters, Brenda, Anita, Judy, Jamie, Barbie, and two sons, Tony and Douglas. They were also blessed with thirteen grandchildren, Keith, Christopher, Nathan, Shonda, Christie, Mark, Angel, James, LaChrista, Lauren, Andrew Jr., Summer, Hannah and numerous great and great great grandchildren.
James showed his creative ability in many ways. James enjoyed new activities and pursued a variety of interests. In his spare time he had a passion for music and learned to play many instruments, he enjoyed impromptu gatherings with fellow musicians, spending time with family and friends, gardening, fishing, and a variety of other outdoor activities. He was content to enjoy his hobbies alone but was also willing to share his interests with others.
James was also something of a sports fan and enjoyed watching his favorite events whenever he got the opportunity. Tops on his list were Dallas Cowboys, Dallas Mavericks and the Texas Rangers.
James passed away on March 14, 2018 at home in Balch Springs, TX. He is survived by his wife, Jo Ann, his children, Brenda, Jamie, Tony, Doug and Barbie, his two brothers Dwight and Dwain and sister Mary. Services will be held at Roselawn in Seagoville, TX. James will be laid to rest in Wilson's Chapel Cemetery in Kaufman, TX.
