James Dewey Smith, Sr., age 73, went to be with his Lord and Savior on Wednesday, September 19, 2018 surrounded by his loving family. James was born June 12, 1945 in Wolfe City, Texas to the late Claude Dewey and Era Mae (Marical) Smith. He loved his country and proudly served in the US Army. On August 6, 1983, James married the love of his life, Virginia. James retired from Harper House Printing after 20+ years of dedicated service. He was a hard worker and took great pride in his work, which allowed him the ability to provide abundantly for his family. After retiring, James was able to enjoy many of his favorite activities such as camping, gardening, yard work and building things. James had a great sense of humor and truly enjoyed meeting new people. He was the type person who never met a stranger and took to heart the joys and blessings of friendship. His greatest love and calling in life, however, was his devotion to his family. He loved greatly and was greatly loved!
James was preceded in death by his parents and his brother-in-law, Halbert Stewart. Those left to cherish his memory are is loving wife of 32 years, Virginia R. Smith; sons, James Smith, Jr. and his wife Rebecca Alvarado Smith, Michael Ray Hamby, and Phillip Dale Roberts and his wife Carolina Roberts; daughter, Paula Jean Roberts and her husband, Gary Woodruff; sisters, Margaret Stewart and Sandra Gardner; 14 grandchildren; 2 great grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends.
Visitation will be held Monday, September 24, 2018 from 6pm to 8pm at Roselawn Funeral Home. Funeral Services will be 11am Tuesday, September 25, 2018 at Roselawn Funeral Home with Pastor Johnny Whittiker officiating. Burial with Military Honors will immediately follow at Roselawn Memorial Gardens. If friends so desire, memorial donations in James’ memory can be made to the charity of your choice.
