

John King Cook of Crandall, Texas passed away on July 2, 2026 in Dallas, Texas, leaving behind a legacy of faithful service, unwavering dedication to his family, and a lifelong commitment to helping others. He was born in Austin, Texas, to John F. Cook and Catherine Cook, who preceded him in death.
On October 9, 1970, John married the love of his life, Sharon Cook, in Dallas, Texas. Together they built a life centered on love, family, and service that spanned more than five decades.
John is survived by his devoted wife, Sharon Cook; his children, Chris Cook and wife Jennifer of Vernon, Texas; Shanda Wickersham and husband Greg of Crandall, Texas; and Sharla Polish of Crandall, Texas. He was a proud grandfather to Kaylee and Jonathan Chavez, Shaylee Wickersham, Cason and Kirsten Cook, Karlee and Jade Whittington, Caul Cook, Gauge Wickersham, Kaden Polish, and Gunner Wickersham. He was also blessed with one great-grandchild, Creek Cook.
He is also survived by his siblings, Earnest Cook and wife Janice of Tennessee, Cynthia Bishop and husband Kenneth of Forney, Texas, and Avis Mitchell of Forney, Texas.
John was preceded in death by his parents, John F. Cook and Catherine Cook; his brother, John F. Cook Jr.; his in-laws, Edgar and Elsie Kennedy; his daughter-in-law, LeaAnn Cook; and his brother-in-law, Larry Kennedy.
John earned his bachelor's degree in Psychology from the University of Texas at Dallas. He devoted his professional life to serving those who served our nation, working as a Veterans Service Officer for more than 40 years. Throughout his career, he helped thousands of veterans obtain the disability benefits they had earned through their military service, making a lasting difference in countless lives.
His commitment to veterans extended far beyond his career. John was the longest-serving President of Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 137 and was a co-founder of the Dallas Chapter 137. His leadership, compassion, and tireless advocacy earned him the respect and gratitude of fellow veterans and their families throughout the community.
John will be remembered for his servant's heart, his steadfast dedication to others, and the quiet strength with which he lived his life. His greatest joy came from caring for his family and standing beside those who needed someone to fight for them. His legacy lives on in the many lives he touched, both within his family and among the thousands of veterans he faithfully served.
He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, fellow veterans, and all who had the privilege of knowing him.
