John was born on February 8, 1951, to Clyde William and Frankie Jo Gilcrease in Dallas, Texas. He grew up in South Dallas alongside his brothers and sister and graduated from H. Grady Spruce High School. Bright, curious, and hardworking, John went on to study at El Centro College, where he earned his associate degree.
John was always his father’s shadow, admiring him deeply and following in his footsteps by joining him at Gilcrease TV Repair. Together, they shared not only a trade but a lifelong bond built on dedication and family pride.
Outside of work, John found peace and joy in his garden, where he lovingly tended to his tomatoes, squash, and onions. He had a special fondness for old-time radio shows from the 1940s and 1950s and could often be found watching YouTube videos about the things that sparked his curiosity.
A loyal Texas Rangers and Dallas Cowboys fan, John could be found in front of the TV for most games. He adored the company of cats and had a deep love for music—especially the voices of Karen Carpenter, Barbra Streisand, and The Beatles. But more than anything, John loved his family. He was incredibly close to his parents during their lifetimes, and after their passing, he remained a steadfast presence in the lives of his siblings, nieces, and nephews.
John moved in with his sister, Lisa, just months before his passing, where they shared laughter, companionship, and countless meaningful conversations. To his nieces and nephews, he was far more than an uncle—he was a guiding light, a friend, and a second father or grandfather figure. His gentle nature, sharp wit, and generous heart left a mark on everyone fortunate enough to know him.
Left to cherish his memory are his brother, Joe Earl Gilcrease and wife Rachel; his sister, Lisa Castaneda and husband James; nieces Christy, Melissa, Mandy, Jamie, and Haley; nephew Zackery; and great-nieces and nephews Brooklynne, Scarlet, Amadeus, Magnus, Apollo, Ariel, Alyah Jade, Selena, Julian, and Alex. He is also survived by numerous extended family members and dear friends who loved him deeply.
Welcoming John into Heaven are his beloved parents, Clyde William and Frankie Jo DeBorde Gilcrease, and his brother, Ronald “Ronnie” William Gilcrease.
John will be remembered for his kindness, his laughter, and the unwavering love he gave so freely to those around him. His legacy will live on in the hearts of his family, friends, and all who had the joy of knowing him.
