Joyce was born to the late Aubrey Lloyd Patterson and Jimmie McKissack Patterson on February 6, 1934, in Rice, Texas. She was a homemaker and mom for over 40 years before life changes led her to enter the workforce. Her love of children made her the perfect babysitter, and she relished that role, unofficially adopting one of the many she babysat. Later in life, she owned and managed Misty’s Beauty Supply in Quitman and Garland. She also worked as a pharmacy tech at Sack and Save. During this time, she began the best job of all and one she was an expert at—loving on her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Grannie was the ultimate “Secret Keeper” and problem solver for all of her “babies.”
Joyce held many titles over the years: Mom, Mother, Aunt Joyce, Momma Joyce, but her most important was GRANNIE! She was firm but fair in the upbringing of her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, with high expectations. She supported them with a compassionate heart and gave them her all. You never had a doubt where you stood with Grannie.
Joyce and her sisters and best friend/niece enjoyed traveling, visiting various states and venues. In the earlier years, that travel included talking on the CB Radio. She loved it. Her CB handle was “The Diamond Lady,” and that carried over to her Instagram account. She was an avid reader of true crime stories, a diehard Texas Rangers fan, and loved playing the slot machines. She was quite adept at maneuvering the one-armed bandit and was usually the luckiest one in the crowd of family!
People were naturally drawn to Joyce. She made an impact on everyone from her nurse to her hairstylist, to her nail lady, to the servers at one of her favorite restaurants. They all treated her like family. If you knew her, you loved her. It is that simple.
She is preceded in death by her mother, Jimmie Patterson, and father, Aubrey Lloyd Patterson; sisters Betty Holloway, Ona Mae Horton, JoAnn Kerns, and Francis Hicks; brothers Aubrey Lloyd Patterson Jr., Gerald Patterson, and Jack Patterson; and daughter-in-law Betty Lou Taylor.
She is survived by her son Ronnie Taylor (Melissa) of Tyler; daughter Karen Denise McCullough (Bryne) of Forney; daughter Barbara Jean Taylor of Forney; along with the one she “adopted” and loved Angie Chandler. Grandchildren Misty Michelle Winstead (Sam), Cody Bryne McCullough (Teresa), Taylor Renae Laughlin (Will) and Brian Morgan; great-grandchildren Haleigh Layman, Alex Layman, Mason Layman, Liam Winstead, Luke Laughlin, Gracyn Laughlin, Kadence Morgan, and Tate Morgan; Special Niece/Best Friend Jeannie Patterson; as well as many Nieces and Nephews.
