Judy was born on July 31, 1945 in Greenville, Texas to Rufus Vernon Slade Jr. and Grace Shelton Slade. She grew up in Northeast Texas and graduated from Greenville High School in 1963. After graduation, she moved to Dallas with a friend and began working as a waitress. It was there that her life changed forever when she met the love of her life, Doug Herron.
Nanny and Pops began dating and soon discovered they had found something special in one another. They married the day after Christmas, on December 26, 1967, and wasted little time beginning the family that would become the heart of their lives. For nearly 59 years, Judith and Doug built a life together filled with family, memories, and love.
Judith worked in the Environmental Services Department at Tri-City Hospital in Southeast Dallas for many years, retiring when the hospital closed around 2002. She was a hardworking woman, but her greatest joy was always found in the people and things she loved most.
When she wasn’t working or spending time with her family, Nanny loved caring for her animals, especially her dogs. And if she wasn’t at home, there was a good chance you could find her having a good time at the Balch Springs Bingo Hall or trying her luck at the casino!
More than anything, Judith was known and loved as Nanny. She leaves behind a lifetime of memories and a family who will forever cherish the time, love, and laughter they shared with her.
Judith was preceded in death by her parents, Grace and Rufus Slade Jr., and her brother, Vernon Shelton Slade.
Left to cherish her memory are her beloved husband of nearly 59 years, Douglas Mack Herron Sr.; their children, Suzy Roach; Douglas “Junior” Mack Herron Jr. and wife, Michelle; Rufus “Shane” Herron and wife, Samantha Nelson; and her bonus son, Stanley Waddle and wife, Misty.
Nanny was also deeply loved by her grandchildren, Paul Roach, Slade Herron, Jessie Lee Herron and wife, Nadia, Shelby Herron and wife, Bonnie, Justin Herron and wife, SJ, John David Hale Jr., Destiney Herron and husband, Justin White, Devon Dunn, Ava Nicole, Paul Pineda, Mia Pineda, Stanley Waddle Jr., Casey Wellman and husband, Ryan, and Shane Englert.
Her legacy continues through her great-grandchildren, Paisley, River, Jessie Jr., Adalynn, Alaynna, Brantley, Jett, Waylon, Rylee, Callie, Kinsley, Kolsyn, Kollins, Kashlynn, Studson, Palmer, and MJ.
She is also survived by her sisters, Camilla “Millie” Thornton of Irving, Texas, and Donna Wood of Greenville, Texas, along with numerous nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends.
Though Nanny will be deeply missed, the love she gave, the memories she created, and the family she helped build will continue to carry her with them always.
