Beryl Marie Works, age 97, passed away on Tuesday February 19, 2019 in the Kemp Care Center where she was loved by the staff because of her sweet attitude and beautiful smile. Beryl was born October 17, 1921 in May, Texas to John and Sallie Wagnon.
Marie was raised in a loving household with four sisters and three brothers. In 1939, she graduated as valedictorian of her class and married William Doyle Works. They started a family in 1943 and her husband joined the Army in 1944, and then went to Germany as a medic during WWII. She stayed married to him until his death in 1984. She was a loyal employee of Southwestern Bell for 35 years. Her house was always neat and orderly thanks to her running a tight ship of ironed pillow cases, beds made every morning, dirty dishes never left in the sink and a scrubbed bath tub after every use. She always had a full meal on the stove for anyone who walked through the door. Her only dinner time rule was: two vegetables and they couldn't be the same color. She had her infamous "Black Belt" that she used on every grandchild, except for one (Can you guess which one?). She never complained about anything except the cats in her bushes and the leaves in her driveway or yard. She was always outside in the mornings and evenings taking care of all those leaves. The neighbors lovingly nicknamed her "Broom Lady" and nothing would delight her more than getting a new broom for Christmas. We are sure she is in Heaven sweeping the clouds away like she did the leaves in her driveway.
Marie recalls being saved and baptized at a small Baptist church when she was nine or eleven years old. She attended Beverly Hills Church of Christ during her later years due to it being closer to her home. On Mother's Day in 2017 she joined Victory Church in Scurry, Texas and was the oldest member there. She loved her weekly visits with Brother Art Treherne.
She had a fierce, unconditional love for her family and friends that will never be forgotten but rather missed every day. Her sharp wit, quick comebacks and beautiful smile could brighten the darkest of days. She has left a legacy of love, laughter and loyalty for her family to remember.
Marie is preceded in death by her parents, loving husband of 47 years William D. Works, grandson Bryan Works, 7 siblings and numerous nieces and nephews.
Marie is survived by her three children; Wellman Works and wife Sharon of Tupelo, MI, Jimmy Works and wife Linda of Wills Pointe, TX and Carole Dudley of Scurry, TX. Great-grandchildren Lauren Battle, Elizabeth Works, Victoria Works, Lindsey Creal, William Works, Devin Works and Cooper Campise.
