Marshall was raised in Hill County and graduated from Bynum High School in 1960. He moved in with his eldest brother, Leon in Waco. While attending Barber School, he obtained his barber's license in 1961. He moved to Killeen where he practiced cutting hair for the soldiers from Fort Hood.
Marshall later moved to Dallas where he attended a church revival and meet the love of his life. He married Judy Carol Franklin in 1963 and raised two children in South Dallas.
Marshall's passion for being a barber would continue to grow as he opened his own shop in 1965 on Lake June Rd. He made sure to keep prices low at his shop and was known to barter goods and services when clients were short on cash. He was called ‘Money Bags’ by all of the kids because he would regularly hand out cash to the kids. He barbered for nearly 60 years until his retirement in 2020.
He would close the shop, even if he didn’t want to. He loved to take his family on vacation trips, usually camping and fishing. Marshall loved to fish, he obtained over 100 fishing rods and reels and would be regularly seen on the shores of Lake Lavon, Cedar Creek Lake and Lake Tawakoni. His favorite vacation spot was Port Aransas where he could be found standing on the Jetty, fishing his heart out. He also enjoyed wade fishing in the ocean, water up past his hips with his big floppy hat, waiting for his next catch.
His family and friends will always remember how every room would light up when Marshall would walked in; entertaining everyone. He and Judy were ready for Christmas so he could entertain with his cooking and flamboyant personality. Marshall was known for his holiday briskets, chicken, and ribs. He always made sure everyone was taken care of with a generous heart and giving spirit. He was quick with a smile and always a jokester.
Marshall played football and baseball in high school. This led him to pitch in a softball league for 16 years and a great love for his Dallas Cowboys. The decor in his shop was a testament to his dedication to the team. He adored being Papaw to Dawson, teaching him baseball from the time he was born by putting the ball in his hands. He also taught him to pitch, how to work the garden, and kill the ants. Dawson was always by his side.
Greeting him at Heaven's gates were his parents, Walter and Hilda Hocker; his beloved wife of 60 years, Judy Carol Hocker, and their son, Justin Bernard Hocker.
Marshall is survived by his daughter, Christine Hocker and husband, Craig Spindle; grandson, Dawson Clay Spindle; brothers, Leon Hocker, David Hocker and wife Donna; sister, Avalon 'Tonie' Kelm and husband Dan; nieces, Hillary Lugo, Amanda Fletcher, Brandi Kelm; nephews, Kurt Hocker, Fritz Hocker, Mel 'Scooter' Hocker, Jared Helm, along with numerous other nieces & nephews, extended family and loving friends.
