William "Bill" Augusta Keeling, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and man of unwavering faith, passed away on December 17, 2025. He was 84 years old. William was the steadfast patriarch of the Glass, Covington, and Smith families, remembered for his strong work ethic, lifelong commitment to learning, and deep love for his family and community.
William was born on July 23, 1941, in Gadsden, Alabama, the youngest of five children born to Eddie Keeling and Lillie Covington. Though Gadsden was his hometown, he spent a significant portion of his youth in Detroit, Michigan, where he formed enduring bonds with his siblings. Those relationships remained important throughout his life, and he frequently returned to Detroit to visit family.
In 1963, William relocated to Buffalo, New York, where he began his professional career in maintenance at Buffalo General Hospital. His entrepreneurial spirit soon emerged, and alongside his sister, Dorothy “Dot” Smith, he co-owned a tavern. He was also instrumental in the founding of the Buffalo Tavern Association.
In 1974, William moved to Dallas, Texas, where he joined Otis Engineering Corporation. Through dedication and perseverance, he advanced to the role of Operations Engineer and retired in 1993 after nearly two decades of service.
Committed to personal growth at every stage of life, William earned his G.E.D. in 1999, exemplifying his belief that learning has no age limit. In 2016, he further demonstrated his civic pride by becoming a member of the Garland Citizens Police Academy Association. He also was a 33rd degree Mason.
Teaching was one of William’s greatest passions. He served as an instructor at Texas Barber College and as a Driver’s Education teacher with All-American Driving School. Through patience, encouragement, and care, he left a lasting impression on countless students, equipping them with practical skills and confidence.
William’s life was deeply anchored in his faith. In 1990, he was ordained as a deacon at New Mt. Hebron Baptist Church under the leadership of Rev. W.J. Davis. He faithfully served on the Usher Board, sang in the Men’s Chorus, and most cherished his role as teacher of the Men’s Sunday School class, where he shared scripture, wisdom, and fellowship.
On January 4, 1992, William married his beloved wife, Betty Keeling. Together, they built a life rooted in love, faith, and mutual support. He was affectionately known as “Poppa” to his grandchildren.
In his leisure time, William found peace and joy in painting, having spent years studying Bob Ross daily to refine his craft. He also enjoyed working puzzles, a pastime that reflected his thoughtful and patient nature.
William is survived by his wife, Betty Keeling; his children, Dwayne (Kelia) Keeling of Charlotte, North Carolina; Nick (Cynthia) Hill of Wylie, Texas; Jarrett (Moniqua) Keeling of Cedar Hill, Texas; and Nicole (Ted) Smith-Hooks of Forney, Texas; and his grandchildren, Nicholas, Nathaniel, Holland, and Nila. He is also survived by his sister, Dorothy Johnson; his niece, Renita; and his great-niece, Chevon.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Eddie Keeling and Lillie Covington; his sisters, Betty Smith and Mamie Smith; and his brother, Sonny Smith.
William lived by the words of Joshua 24:15: “As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.” His life stood as a testament to that promise, and his legacy of faith, service, and love will continue to guide all who knew him.
A visitation will be held at Roselawn Funeral Home, located at 1000 S Highway 175, Seagoville, TX 75159, on January 9, 2026, from 10:00 am to 11:00 am. The funeral service will follow at the same venue at 11:00 am. A committal service will follow in the Roselawn Memorial Gardens
