September 25, 1932 – March 31, 2025
Chiyoko Rawlings, 92, of Seaside, California, passed away peacefully on March 31, 2025, surrounded by her loving family. Born in Okinawa, Japan to Kenyu and Oto Ueuntun, she was one of nine children raised on a family farm. Chiyoko endured the hardships of World War II with resilience and courage, losing her father during the Battle of Okinawa. After the war, she worked for American families. She met her husband, Boyd Rawlings, while working at the US Army Officer’s Club. They married in 1955 and raised five children together. His army career took them to Germany, Virginia, and back to Okinawa, but they always returned to their home in Seaside, California.
Chiyoko became a U.S. citizen in 1961, learning English, earning her driver’s license, and working in various jobs while helping to support her family. She especially loved working in a children’s store in Carmel.
A devoted member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Chiyoko found peace in her faith and community, especially through her service as a church librarian and temple attendance. She loved her family deeply and was happiest surrounded by them at Sunday dinners and holiday celebrations.
Chiyoko was a wonderful cook. Her grandchildren especially enjoyed her chocolate chip cookies, English toffee, and pickles. She was a talented seamstress, making her own temple dresses and sewing clothes for her children and grandchildren. She loved to crochet and give away afghans, hats, and scarves. Chiyoko was an avid fitness enthusiast and loved her aerobics classes. She was eager to try new things and participated in Zumba and spin classes into her 80s.
She is preceded in death by her husband Boyd, daughter Kathryn (Dale), parents Kenyu and Oto, and siblings Tomi (Seison), Tsuru, Kenko (Yoneko), Kiyoko (Seikichi), Nahe (Echi), and Yoshiko (Choyo). She is survived by her sister Shizuko (Gaiyu), and children James (Ann), Steven, Linda, and Michael, and grandchildren Tisha, Julia, Laura (Spencer), Evan, Greg (Sally), and Devereaux as well as 9 great-grandchildren. Chiyoko will be remembered for her strength, resilience, humility, and unconditional love.
A memorial service will be held on April 26, 2025 at 11:00 AM at 1024 North Noche Buena Street, Seaside CA.
