Our family was very sorry to hear of Phil's passing.  He was a valued member of the San Carlos School Community, a great family man--really, an example for other men.  I always struggled with calling him Phil, because there was a strength and importance about him that made "Mr. Malate" (though I'm now in my 50s), more appropriate.  He was a good and kind person, always there w/ Tessie, supporting his grandchildren, shuttling San Carlos students to and from golf, attending so many school functions, including Grandparents Day, Christmas program, and speaking for Veterans Day.  His kids and grandchildren were his life.  Whether his son Patrick, or his Granddaughters Antonia and Audrina, when he spoke of them and their accomplishments, you knew how proud he was.  Rest in peace, Phil.  Thank you for your service to our country.  Thank you for your service to San Carlos School and the San Carlos School Community. With great sadness, I would like to express my most sincere condolences to Tessie & her family & friends.  That includes their church family.  I was honored to know Phil & Tessie from St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church, when I became the parish secretary for many years.  May he rest in peace & may God grant Tessie & family peace & comfort during this difficult time.  My son loved Phil, he too was a Knight ( Antonio Cortez).

After almost a quarter of a century trying to locate Phil, I finally tracked him down and received the sad news today that one of my mentors in the Army had passed away. A total shock and so sorry I didn't get to connect with him before his departure.  My wife Unha and I send our deepest condolences to Tessie and the rest of the family.  Phil and I were both stationed in Hawaii in the 1/19th Infantry during the 1980s.  He was a First Sergeant in B Company and I was a Platoon Sergeant(E-7) in A Company.  We became close friends professionally and he was always trying to get me to move to his Company as one of his Platoon Sergeants.  I will never forget his kindness.  While stationed there it was Phil that broke the news secretly to me that I had been selected for promotion to E-8.  Phil had a Warrant Officer friend that worked at the 25th Division Headquarters and Phil asked him to check to see if I was on the promotion list.  Phil called me up and gave me the news and said I would be getting a call from our Battalion Commander to inform me that I had got selected for promotion and for me to act surprised.  That's the kind of person and friend he was to all who knew him.  The last time I saw Phil was in the 90s when he was the Commandant at the NCO Academy in Hawaii and we were both Sergeant Majors.  One reason I was trying to get hold of him a few years ago was to have him organize and coordinate a 1/19th Infantry Reunion in Hawaii since his old boss Captain Wiercinzski who had made 3-Star General was now the Pacific Commander there.  My friend you will surely be missed and I am very sorry we didn't get to meet up.

Phil is my brother knight.  I have high respect for Phil.  He was a true, moral acting person. I have always listened to his expertise and loved sharing our christian involvement in church service giving God our gift of service and being able to share thectalent of singing in our church choir.  There were many, many years at St. FRANCIS XAVIER sharing many events from festival, monthly socials out of town installations, especially for Fr. Luis, and celebrating the 25th anneversary for Fr. Heiber and Sr. Carmelita Heredia, and many more.  Our brother is now with Jesus.  Your brother in Christ, Walter Washington, PGK 

I first met Phil when he worked at Seaside and later got to know Phil better as a Knight at St. Francis Xavier Parish. Phil was a most gentle, calm, kind, patient yet assertive man whom I never heard him raise his voice. I never heard him say an bad word about anyone nor a bad word. His service to his Parish and community showed that he was the salt and you could see his light. I was a little jealous that he always looked the best in any photograph. The best lighting. His best side. Of course he had his own photographer. I was most honored to be allowed to serve with my Brother Sir Knights of the Fourth Degree at his funeral services as we promise when we join the Fourth Degree. 

I knew him as “Phil” Malate, my Field Training Officer, Badge #445, when I started working at Santa Cruz PD.  He was so patient and encouraging and was always a calming presence. I learned so much from him and considered him a mentor and friend. He is a large part of the reason I pursued a career in law enforcement. He was always happy to be at work, and was a positive influence in so many ways. May he Rest In Peace. May his family find comfort in many fond memories of him. Holly Hoy

Our hearts are deeply sharing your loss with you.  Phil will always be remembered  as an honorable gentleman who served his country, his church, loved his friends and family. I feel so blessed that God gave us some quality time with him on Sunday, took pictures, and exchanged laughter and hugs. Life is so precious and unpredictable. You will be in our thoughts, sending love, prayers, and lasting friendship!

To my Brother Knight of Columbus. We are diminished by your passing. Your friendship and mentoring guided me to be the Catholic Gentlemen I am today. Your leadership and support did not go unnoticed by everyone who was blessed to have known you.

Tessie and all your family, I am so very sorry and was heartbroken when Noly called to tell me of Phil’s passing. He has been my dear friend for 62 years and has always been the same sweet person I met when we were in middle school. Unfortunately, We have not seen each other much in all these years but I will always have fond memories. Your family are in my prayers and I pray you will have peace and comfort during these days.
