James Scott Probst
James Scott Probst passed away December 28, 2011. He was born December 11, 1963 in Elmhurst Illinois. Every since he was a boy Jim loved sports. He played on hockey and football teams, and enjoyed playing neighborhood softball teams, riding bikes, and swimming in our pool with all his siblings and numerous friends. Jim always had a lot of buddies, and as a handsome young man, plenty of girlfriends too. But Jim wasn’t only attractive, he was brilliant too. He tested MENSA level and was accepted into Arizona State University’s School of Engineering. In 1981 he moved to Tempe, Arizona near the campus, where he was pleasantly surprised he could grow beautiful roses even in our harsh desert environment, giving roses every year on Mother’s Day to mom, grandma, and sister too once when she because a mom. Jim completed all but a few courses of his 5 yr chemical engineering program at ASU while working at the Rinchem Company in Phoenix, Az. But in due course decided that working for a chemical corporation was not the life he wanted. Instead Jim leveraged his creative and entrepreneurial talents, running a number of small businesses related to music, another passion. Ultimately his love of nature, especially of the green woods and blue seas that are markedly absent in the desert lowlands of Arizona, called upon him, and he moved out to California for a new life. He eventually landed in Big Sur, a magical place surrounded by God’s beauty. Jim truly loved it there, growing flowers up on the ridge, looking out over the cliffs to the clouds, dolphins swimming at sea, and beautiful sunsets on the ocean. He earned his living as a Sound Engineer in Events planning department of the Esalen institute, a place for learning and growth of human mind, body, and spirit, blending Eastern and Western Philosophies. He was also the owner/operator of his own company, Dynamic Audio, providing the sound at many local music festivals and events. He enjoyed his music, watching sports with friends, gardening, wine tasting, and doing photography with his brothers.
Jim was a free spirit with a gentle soul who was loved by everyone who knew him, and he will be missed terribly. He is survived by his Mother, Gerri Ross of Maricopa, Arizona, His sister Sharon Ragsdale of Maricopa, Arizona, His brothers, Robert Probst and wife Mari of Phoenix Arizona, and Christopher Probst and wife Alena of Burbank California; His nephew,, Michael Ragsdale, Nieces’ Amy Ragsdale and Miranda Probst, as well as Aunts, Uncles and Cousins. Jim was preceded in death by his Father, Robert Probst, Grandparents, Stanley and Harriett Chytla, and Grandmother, Suzanne Probst.
