Born December 10, 1935, in Detroit, Michigan, Janet grew up there and graduated from Dearborn High School in 1954. She went on to serve honorably for three years in the United States Air Force, an experience that sparked a lifelong love of travel. Her adventures took her to Zimbabwe, China, Thailand, the Galapagos Islands, and broadly across Europe—enriching her life with adventure, culture and history.
Janet lived in Seaside, California for the last 20 years of her life, in a small house that she cherished. She was fiercely independent, guided by strong convictions, and a clear sense of self. A lifelong Democrat, she remained politically active and committed to civic engagement.
She invested wisely in real estate for more than 40 years and transformed many homes across California and Oregon. She had a remarkable ability to recognize potential and to bring character, beauty and function to the places she touched.
Her love of the natural world ran deep. She was committed to the environment and found great joy in cultivating her gardens and creating vibrant spaces that reflected her connection to the earth.
Animals and automobiles also held a special place in her heart. She loved her Dobermans, especially Callie, her beloved Arabian horse, Solo, and her 1963 Porsche 356 - each a long-time companion in their own ways.
Janet is survived by her daughter Cathryn; her son-in-law Steven Nation; her grandson, Tyler Nation and his wife Alex; her granddaughter Jenna Nation; and her great grandson Liam Nation.
Her life was shaped by an adventurous spirit and an enduring commitment to the welfare of the planet. She will be deeply missed.
In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to the Elkhorn Slough Foundation, P.O. Box 267, Moss Landing, CA 95039.
