Shirley was preceded in death by her husband of 72 years, Calvin G. Garner. Shirley was the sole survivor of a family of 6 siblings. She is survived by her three children Steven R. Garner of Seaside, California, Kellie Garner-Mitchell of Chehalis Washington, and Brooks J Garner of Vancouver, Washington, as well as six grandchildren, six great grandchildren and a large extended family.
Shirley and Cal moved to Carmel Valley in 1956 where they raised their three children and built a successful construction business. She had an unquenchable thirst for learning. She was an avid reader and wanted to increase her knowledge as well as advance her education.
Shirley loved to entertain with dinner parties, holiday celebrations, luncheons, ladies’ teas and any other reason to gather with friends and family. She was always very gracious and would set an extra place at the table, should an unexpected arrival show up. However, invitations for Sunday dinner were coveted by friends and family alike.
She collected (and read) cookbooks, beautiful sets of tableware, teapots and anything with a Noah’s Ark theme.
Shirley was a member of Aglow International, held numerous leadership positions, and enjoyed traveling the world on mission trips. She was known for her wisdom, generosity, and integrity, but the most important thing to her was to share the saving power of Jesus’ love to everyone she met.
Some of her parting words were often “I’ll see you here, there, or in the air” and “It won’t be heaven without you”.
